Desktop Help Problem

I received a email today saying that bt had sent wrong link for desktop help(Business Customers) a short while ago,I didn't download.Today I downloaded the desktop help via the link they sent it has downloaded correctly. Everytime I go to access it, it Brings me to the BT diagnostic wizard registration and I get this message

"We have detected you have not used the BT diagnostic wizards before so we need you to enter your BT Total Broadband account details below : "

I enter my phone number as requested but it does not recognize it and continually asks over..

Would be grateful for any ideas as had used it before on old laptop and liked it..

many thanks

I would be seriously wary about entering account details into that.

Are you ABSOLUTELY sure it's from BT as it sounds a lot like a social engineering scam.

Oh, and Desktop Help is usually considerably more hassle than it's worth !!

An MSCE in computing is like having a McDonalds Certification in World Cuisine, pointless.

Re: Desktop Help Problem

It was from BT as the Desktop Help they had sent week before was the Business one..The link today brought to the offical BT site to download it but I'm suspicious anyway so I went to my account and downloaded it. Have uninstalled it as it of no use if it not working..Thanks Outcast_Aussie

Re: Desktop Help Problem

As stated the desktop help is useless. You would be better to simply uninstall it.

Re: Desktop Help Problem

Hi, do you have admin rights to the PC as you need this to install ?

what is the URL you are downloading it from ? the correct one is www.bt.com/help/broadbanddesktophelp give this a go, in might be worth uninstalling the other version first if installed and checking it is full removed from your registry before you install again, you can do this by following the steps below you will need to be in an admin account to do this

1 click start

2 in the search box type Regedit and click return

3 click the yes to the user access control if it come up

4 then once the Reg editor come up double click on the following to expand the list HKEY_local_Machine, then Software

5 then look for a folder called Motive, if it is there just right click it and select delete

6 reboot you PC

7 download desktop help from the URL above.

I would also add I have used desktop help on several occassions over the years and whilst I agree it was not great at the start it has come a long way and solved quite a number of issues for me, so would not just accept people saying it is useless, whilst they are intitled to their opinion I would take a look and make your own mind up as it has help me as I say several times.

Re: Desktop Help Problem

Tried it thanks Dan, but to no avail - not one of BT's better products

Re: Desktop Help Problem

The Desktop Help is there to fix issues with things like connection and email and so on. All of these can be done much easier in the apps themselves without the use of this program.

If your having a issue with something then asking how to fix that issue would get quicker results than trying to install a program that won't let you install it and doesnt give you the best results when it does.

So what issue are you having that you are hoping that desktop help will fix for you ?

Re: Desktop Help Problem

I got the same message and checked the Desktop Help program that I had installed.

Right enough, it was for business users. I installed the new one and when it got to asking for some details I knew it was kosher when it had my phone number listed as belonging to a 'miss Debbie X' when in fact I am a great hairy Jim. BT changed my sex last month when they sent me a replacement Home Hub.

Anyway the new software is definitely one of BT's originals as it didn't work and I have now binned it. Happy days.

Debbie - scheeech...!

Re: Desktop Help Problem

Thanks Dan..Tried what you recommended but same problem continually asks for my number...It's working the very best on my other laptop it runs Vista but it not working on my new one that runs windows 7...I found it very helpful in the past on my other laptop to fix problems as I am not to computer minded...

I think I will be giving it a miss from now on as I thought BT would have it up and running and I definitely will not be recommending it to friends or family to download...

Many Thanks again everyone that has posted
