If you want the job done, as pointed out by @Keith_Beddoe, you need to contact your customer support at Sky. It is THEY and only they who can request the required relocation of the said master socket (if at all).

Neither BT nor Openreach know you from Adam. You are a SKY customer.

Merry Christmas to you too!

Hi Guys,

I am a network engineer so quite at home with structured cabling however I haven't dealt with anything non-vm or CAT5/6 for quite some time - so looking for a bit of a sanity check.

The house I have just moved into has BT sockets in every single room. with cables running up walls, around skirting boards, through walls, through door frames all mounted at varying angles - not one of them straight haha!

Anyway, to the point.

It isn't obvious which of these sockets is the main one, but thankfully I'm not planning on using the line for anything other than broadband, which is being activated on Christmas Eve.

The line comes into the loft from the gable end then runs the length of the house rafters into the first floor somewhere.

I want to install the broadband router into the loft, I have my own access point to go up there instead of the hub, so my question is this... Can I just cut the incoming cable inside the loft and terminate into an MK4 filtered Openreach socket leaving everything else for dead to be ripped out?

Thanks for your time guys,

Mox

Hi Keith,

Thanks for the kind welcome.

Yep, a bit of key information left out there, apologies.

Sky are providing the broadband and are waiting for BT to activate the line.

I'm just looking for confirmation that I can simply cut the wire back in the loft and terminate into a new master socket.

The reason for my hesitation is that when looking at someone else's BT install they have a junction box just on the inside of the house which I seem to have mounted on the gable end. I am guessing it is just a junction switching from external to internal cable, but just checking to be sure that it isn't some inline filter or device that I need to account for.

Cheers,

Mox

It is usually just a junction box where the dropwire meets the internal wiring

as you are getting sky broadband then you need to post any further enquiries on the sky forum as this is a BT RETAIL forum and nothing to do with openreach

Yep, a bit of key information left out there, apologies.

This is a BT Retail Customer Forum, so you need to post on the Sky User Forum, and someone there should be able to advise. Sky have their own exchange equipment in the exchange so you must not cause any damage to it, by incorrect wiring.

Sky User - The unofficial support forum for everything Sky!

Its not BT Retail that activate the line, its Openreach.

It will be Openreach that visit, so any changes that need to be made, must be made by them.

If you are in any doubt, speak to Sky, as they are your provider.

Thanks

Cheers for the tips guys. I didn't think it mattered who the provider was since it would be coming across the BT infrastructure into my home.

I assumed it would be a bit like having your water supplied by ACME, its still Untied Utilities infrastructure and you would still speak to UU if you wanted to know about moving a service.

Never heard of anyone tacking down the exchange or an ISP from a bit of house wiring either 😄

I have since learned that BT own the infra upto the master socket, and with a stroke of luck I have found said master socket, so I'll give BT / OR a call and get them to move it upto the loft.

Have a great Christmas everyone

Mox
