Hi folks,

I want to use the pre-existing cables for the BT phone sockets in the house. Last we had things done, as I had wireless phones, I only had the install to the main socket and the wiring in the house was not connected up. I bought an extension cable and a double socket so that in theory I could use the double socket from the main BT socket, I cold then cut the extension cord, and solder the wires to the existing installation.... Only the colour systems and number of wires are different!

On the extension cable there are 6 wires Pink, Green. Brown, white yellow and grey. On the existing cabling there are 4 wires, white/blue - blue/white - orange/white - white/orange......

Does anyone know which ones should connect to which?

To make it more complicated there is another 5 cable extension which also features green!!!

Any thoughts/input would be really appreciated, thanks,

Gazzer

Are you just trying to create more phone socket outlets so you can connect more phone or are you hoping to use sockets for broadband?

Which master do you have

The colour of the wires is immaterial just make sure they are connected to the correct terminals 2&5 which are visible to the left of master when faceplate is removed

Never come across telephone cabling with those colour codes. Sounds more like the kind of cabling used in alarm systems, which wouldn’t do your Broadband any favours.

It’s quite common to come across Alarm Cabling being used as Telephone Cabling.

Don’t know if it’s cheaper but best guess is it’s usually done by, ‘I know a guy who will do it for less’.

I am confident that the household pre existing cabling with the 4 wires, orange, blue and white and multiples of, was BT cabling and installed and working some time ago - the extension cable I bought off Amazon probably would work on the basis that the cables went from pin 1 to output 1 thus just an extension cable - but my issue is joining the pre existing cable to the main socket!

Would be easier if I could show pictures I think, but I have 4 cables in the house that I need to put some kind of extension too as they are too short to reach the BT main socket...but there are only two cables coming into the box that are used..... orange and white..... I think I may just give in gracefully.....

Problem with alarm cabling is it’s usually untwisted pairs, which can easily allow unwanted noise in, which in turn could cause errors and ultimately drops in your connection.
