I do not believe there is any way to have Digital Voice without using the Smart Hub 2.

The BT Digital Essential and Advanced phones connect to it (Hub has DECT) and you can plug a wired phone into the Hub directly. There is no other way to connect the Service.

Richard

Is there any way of using the digital voice service with your own router?

No, the smart hub 2 has the DECT base station inside, which provides the Digital Voice service using the BT supplied phones. It also has a phone socket for normal wired phones.
