Fluctuating internet speed since upgrade

I recently upgraded to 900 mbps, from 300mbps.

The upgrade took place last Wednesday (5/08), but I haven't received the BT router yet.

I wasn't too worried about not receiving the router, as I'm planning to continue using my own third party router anyway. It's a TP-link Archer x50 and should be more than suitable for my use.

Since the upgrade though, I've been receiving somewhere between 300mbps, and about 600mbps down, and about 20 to 60 mbps up. It fluctuates wildly every test.

Is this because I haven't yet connected the BT router, or is this something I should be complaining about?
