Hi ,

I don't know if anyone else has had any experience with this ,but basically our ONT has been placed in the bedroom ( presuming the easiest location) but this is not only inconvenient but also don't feel this is a great idea having to have the router right near to where we sleep .

Is there any way of getting this moved without it costing a fortune which I understand is normally the case with having it moved .

I have debated leaving the ONT where it is and either trying to get our housing association to do an ethernet run to behind the TV or something in the living room . Or less preferably a second powerline network ,but then if we were to go to a package over 100mbps then we wouldn't get the full potential of it

Is it a Greenfield or Brownfield Site?

If it’s Greenfield they ONT would’ve been put in by the builder, Openreach pay them £20 for this. They make recommendations on the placement of the ONT but obviously the Developer has final say as they’re are the ones installing it.

From what I’ve seen the bedroom isn’t the worst place, one Developer on a New Site put them in the bathroom airing cupboard with no Ethernet Ports throughout the house.

Any case you’d have to ask BT to raise an ONT Shift with Openreach but they won’t do it until after the Lockdown Restrictions have been lifted. Couldn’t say if there’s a cost to you or not and how much it would be?

If it’s a Brownfield Site was the ONT Installed there prior to you moving in? If so it’s possibly where the person who originally ordered it wanted it and you’ve now inherited it.

Again you can request an ONT Shift buy as above you’ll have to wait.

Its not going to be practical for Openreach to relocate the ONT, apart from the cost, there would have been a standard installation agreed with the housing association, especially if its an new build,

If you have existing powerline adapters, then you can simply add on an additional unit, you do not need a separate network.

Ethernet cable is the only other alternative, and if it is a new build, I am surprised that Ethernet connections were not provided to each room.

If your property is a bungalow type building ( one floor ) and the bedroom faces the road / footpath where the ‘network’ is installed, then the obvious / easiest place where your ‘feed’ enters the property may be the bedroom, if for example the living room is on the opposite side of the property to the road / footpath where the network is , it’s more internal surface wiring to get to that location , so the developer ( if a new build ) would pick the location that is convenient, that apparently is the bedroom
You could ask for the ONT to be relocated but it wouldn’t be done for free, or arrange to get the router cabled back to the existing ONT location, that way the ONT is the only device in the bedroom.
