Hello all,

I am due to get upgraded to BT fibre on 8th April from BT ADSL.

I currently use a TP-Link W9970 as modem/router but plan to start using my Netgear R7000 (running AsusWRT-Merlin firmware) as the router.

My understanding of the new set-up will be as follow:

Huawei ONT on the wall, then I can connect the R7000 through the WAN port using PPoE connection.

However, I want the Netgear to use a fix IP address of 192.168.1.1 and a range of internal ip from 192.168.1.254.

Is that possible? Does the Huawei used DHCP to give an ip address to the router? And is there going to be an issue with two NAT on the network? one from the Netgear router and one from the Huawei modem?

Thank you for your time, and I am looking forward to your replies.

The Huawei ONT is just a modem, it doesn't perform NAT or any other routing functions. You can use whatever addressing scheme you like for your LAN and router management address.

Hi thank you for your prompt reply.

Is it then possible to set-up the TP-Link to act the same way ? So I can set-up the Netgear prior to the install?

Not sure if the TP Link has a bridge mode. If it does, then yes, you can set the Netgear up with it as a modem.

Again, thank you for your reply.

Yes it does, so I can just disable the WiFi, the DHCP (on the TP-Link) ?

That will stop the Netgear complaining about two NAT?
