Replace homehub 6 - better parental controls

Hi.

So I have FTTC and HomeHub 6. I wish to get a better solution for parental controls plus wifi stability plus range and have been thinking of getting the Netgear Nighthawk ac3200.

I have a couple of questions:

- can HH6 go into "modem mode"?

- if not can someone recommend a solution with excellent parental control features and has modem capability for BT

You need to remove that link to Amazon, as its not permitted here.

The home hubs cannot be put into modem mode.

You need a VDSL modem/router combination, or a separate VDSL modem.

Bear in mind, you may have issues with the Netgear, if you have BT TV.

I've used an Asus DSL-AC68U for many years & it has a decent range of parental controls including time scheduling, bandwidth limiting, website blocking etc.

Wifi range is very decent as well.

Would depend what your budget is. Most third party routers have great parental controls.

Hi @Tim does this also allow for blocking of ports and not just http traffic over 80 etc?

Sounds like one for me to investigate. 🙂

Firstly don't know who got the message as it wasn't me.

There are facilities to block specific websites/urls or those who partially match a given string , port blocking by local port or remote port or local ip address or remote ip address plus a few other bits & pieces. Can't say I've ever tried the port blocking though but I've used the website/url side of things successfully.

This is an extract for the port stuff:-

The Network Services filter blocks the LAN to WAN packet exchanges and restricts devices from using specific network services.

For example, if you do not want the device to use the Internet service, key in 80 in the destination port. The traffic that uses port 80 will be blocked (but https can not be blocked).

Leave the source IP field blank to apply this rule to all LAN devices.

Black List Duration : During the scheduled duration, clients in the Black List cannot use the specified network services. After the specified duration, all the clients in LAN can access the specified network services.
White List Duration : During the scheduled duration, clients in the White List can ONLY use the specified network services. After the specified duration, clients in the White List and other network clients will not be able to access the Internet or any Internet service.
