Wi-fi away from home

Hi,

I can connect to wi-fi no problem when I'm away from home in friends' houses - except to use gmail, google and youtube (whatever the common denominator is for those sites). Other sites load/connect without problem. I HAVE been able to use these flawlessly many times, but the last few days - and, previously, for other days-at-a-time - they won't work. (1) What's the problem; and (2) why have I been able to connect many times but sometimes not? Strangely, I CAN always use the sites on my Android phone through the same wi-fi connection - but not my Windows laptop.

To be clear, I can connect to wi-fi - it's just these sites that intermittently won't work. As soon as I'm home and using my own router, all sites work.
