Hello all,

We have been having broadband issues for a couple of months now as the router keeps disconnecting from broadband.

After calling the helpdesk multiple times and having an engineer check the line they couldn't see any issue, they thought it might be the socket so they replaced the MK2 adapter with a MK4 adapter and the issue still was happening.

Then BT thought it was the router so provided us with a new one. The next day after installing the issue happened again so it clearly wasn't the old router. Router is a Smart Hub 2.

Over the Christmas period I didn't use my PC as I was spending time with family and within minutes of booting it up for the first time, the broadband disconnected again.

The router all of a sudden goes from a solid blue light, to flashing purple, to flashing orange, to still orange and then back to blue when the internet starts working again.

For note, I have a PS4 which I used everyday over Christmas and didn't have any issues then.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Maybe some start-up application is overwhelming the router with requests.

Try disabling all non essential applications on start-up. Google if needed how to do it.

If the router doesn't reboots or disconnects after that, then put back the applications at start-up one by one to work out the culprit by process of elimination.

Hi,

Probably should have been a little clearer, it doesn't just happen on start-up, it also happens throughout the evening when I'm playing.

Last Night for example, I was playing Borderlands Co-op with my friend, only had Discord and Borderlands open and the issue happened again.

Yeah would be a tricky one.

If you have isolated the problem that it's the PC usage which is causing the disconnections then the problem might not be external like the ISP.

You could check the technical logs of the router to make sure which device in your property is connecting to the router but ultimately if its the PC then you need to look at the particular Game or Application causing it.

In the past i have faced issues of disconnect due to combinations of the setup. ISP routers are not that powerful as some third party routers. Example - one time the onedrive app on PC was doing unlimited uploads of large files causing router to reboot.

Another time a chromecast device had a buggy firmware overwhelming the BT Router.

It was very strange how I never had this issue in the past and then all of a sudden it started happening. Unfortunately it's not just specific applications it seems to do it with any program I run...

I am currently at work but I will post the logs from the disconnect last night when I am home if you could keep an eye out and provide more assistance

Thanks!

Sorry you're having problems with the connection. Have you checked the line for noise? Can you try connecting a phone to the test socket behind the master faceplate and dial 17070. Let me know how that goes.

If you upload faster than the home hub can cope with, then it will drop the connection, so perhaps you have something which is running on the computer, which is uploading a lot of data?

You can see the connection being dropped, on this log entry.

It may be worth trying the following.

Try a factory reset of the home hub.

http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11386/%7E/how-do-i-reset-my-bt-hub-to-its-factory-settings%3F

Then turn off smart setup.

http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/44328/~/switching-smart-setup-on-and-off-on-the-bt-ho...

Its possible that the home hub is running out of internal connections, so a factory reset will remove any stale entries.

So, after reading some other posts on here i saw someone having the same issue and they removed the faceplate and ran directly into the test socket with an adapter. I tried this and it worked for a while but this past month the issue has come back. I am having to isolate at this moment in time so working from home is very hard with the disconnects.

i am still getting the same issue on the techincal log:

09:41:32, 09 Jun.

PPP LCP Send Termination Request (User request)

Any help is appreciated

Hi,

We have been struggling with this issue for sometime and i had a previous post about it back in January but the problem never got resolved.

I am currently working from home and whenever i am using my PC the broadband seems to disconnect and then reconnect a minute later. This can happen up to 15 times a day. Our smart hub will produce a flashing purple light, then a flashing orange light, then a still orange light and then it will go back to a still blue light.

I read a post on another forum that advised to run directly into the test socket with an adapter and this worked for about 3 months but now the reconnects are happening again. I read somewhere that it could be due to the upload speed not being able to handle what is being sent but this still happens when i only have Google Chrome open.

I have ran a quiet line test and it is completely silent. We have been supplied with a new router, new faceplate, had engineers out, done factory resets and nothing worked. We pay for Fibre with BT Halo 1 but this does not seem to be value for money the issues we are facing.

Thanks for the help in advance.

I have had 3 in the last hour of writing this.

Please let me know what the next step is.

Thanks

It's connected via ethernet cable. It's the router that is losing connection, not my computer as it effects every device connected.

I am plugged into the test socket now and will see how stable it is tonight

Thanks

Clark

Thanks so everything is fine till you form a connection with the pc then it causes the router to drop?

if so that points to an issue with the pc or even the cable. Can you connect via WiFi to see what happens, change the cable too just to test.

is the cable a shielded one?
Don’t suppose you have a switch in use do you?

It does seem to be the pc but one of the engineers who visited said that they don't believe it to be anything in the house.

I will try and change the cable and see if this makes any difference, my pc doesn't have a WiFi card so I am unable to test this.

Most of the time, I will be the only one device connected apart from a couple of mobile phones

Shame you can’t test it over WiFi but no worries. If it points to the pc I would guess it’s either a bad cable or a hardware fault on the lan side of the pc be it the connection or board side. Again to test that you would need a separate lan card or usb to ethernet adaptor.
It’s just going through the fault finding process to narrow it down and in the end it will point to the issue.
