I kicked myself when I read this! Old age and dappiness meant I'd forgotten the first rule of electronics to restore function namel "Turn it off and turn it on again". Thanks to you I did just that and restored Ethernet instantly on the reboot.

Sudden Ethernet Failure

Problem :-

1. Turned off my ethernet Network connection via win 10 and did what I needed to.

2. Turned it on again and no connection to Network.

3. MS claimed my cable was faulty!

4. So plugged in a brand new one and connected directly to the Blue lit BT router but no connect.

5. turned router on and off; factory reset too but still no connect.

6. Wifi worked fine as did the printer on the Network.

7. Bt are sending me a new router but I think it's a local problem.

Any truly helpful suggestions would be appreciated

Clearly your network adapter hasn't started again correctly. Try removing it in device manager and let W10 find it again.

Why did you turn it off, what did you ' need to do'

Do you often unplug the ethernet cable? constant plugging in/out can cause damage to the socket

I don't have to look anything up. My laptop has had the ethernet unplugged hundreds of times. I don't know where people get this drivel.

Thank you for all your suggestions, one of which I'll try.

For those that put words into my mouth, I did not unplug the cable until MS asked me to fit a new one. I simply disabled the Ethernet in 'adaptor options' as I was testing a USB wifi gizmo. I spent 20 years running a Novell network and never had a dud plug or socket.

All components have a finite lifetime and where connectors are concerned, that lifetime is measured in the number of connections / disconnections.

A typical life cycle of an RJ45 connector is in the region of 750 insertions
