I've read online that PPPoE adds massive overhead, and if your router does not have a hardware offloading option, it shouldn't be used with gigabit speeds. Is there a reason as to why PPPoE is recommended? Is it the only option available because BT wouldn't support any other protocols on aftermarket routers?

I'm not well versed in networking; do I need to connect my router in PPPoE mode or will DHCP work? I will not be using the Smarthub 2.

It is the protocol BT use, there is no choice in the matter.
