It is the firmware. You MUST be able to run both WiFi networks on different channels. There is no other fix. This requires BT supplied firmware.

You can either buy a 3rd party router that supports g.fast. v expensive.

Or disable 5ghz -not an option.

Or use SH1, which has firmware that allows both WiFi networks on different channels.

Such a disappointing service and product from BT.

Smart Hub 2 Wi Fi devices are dropping connection and reconnecting

Hi all, I need some advice. I have the 900mb Fibre package and a Smart Hub 2. I am having issues where like my laptop is disconnecting from the Wi-Fi and reconnecting about 3 secs later. I have checked the log in the router and it shows that DHCP disconnected and reconnected a few seconds later. I see a lot of 2.4 G Client Deauthentications errors and today a lot of devices have disconnected on the Wi-Fi and they all seem to be on the 2.4 G band.

I remember back in May there was an issue with a firmware issue which was causing issues on the bands, but I got Firmware version: v0.27.06.04290-BT. It was cured until this firmware and then it popped back up. Gaming is a pain as the laptop or consoles keep dropping. On Ethernet it is fine and don't drop, but sadly not able to run the laptop hardwired permanently.

Anyone having this issue?? I was looking to change to a 3rd party router, but I have the VOIP voice now so need the Smart Hub, but was looking to disable Wi-Fi on the smart hub and connect the new router to it and use it as the access point and keep the Smart Hub 2 for the Connection and VOIP. Would this work as the issue is getting annoying now. I have reset the hub and this works for a few days and then it develops the same issue.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Anthony

Have you tried changing the channels from auto to fixed channels probably after using a WiFi analyser on mobile to find best channel for your home. Have you also tried changing wireless mode from 1 to either 2 or 3 to see if that helps

Thanks for the reply. I tried that and still the same. I only get a choice of 4 channels if I change from smart to normal and none are what the Wi-Fi analyser suggest. The SH2 only has limited choices by the looks. Thanks again.

Did you ever get to the solution?

I am having similar issues.

Hi, something I had as well. I think it resolved itself by me changing the channel. But to be honest, it was only 1 device that did it, my laptop. I changed to a wire for gaming but it could have been fixed by a firmware update. It still happens occasionally but cant do much as my phone line is now VOIP through smarthub

Thanks ACHarris. As a test I have changed the 2.4Ghz channel as it appears it was that one that was dropping. I am seeing re-logins onto the wifi again even as I write this. Firmware v0.30.01.08093-BT

OK - I have switched off Smart Setup (I assumed that was only a one-time use setup when installing a new hub.)

I use iStmbler to wifi analyse, and then the BT Smart Hub auto select and that channel on 2.4Ghz from 6 to 11 as that seemed less congested, although there are no direct conflicts on 1/6 or 11.

I am on Mode 1 and always understood that was the most stable vs speed option. I am reluctant to fiddle with it . What are the benefits of Mode 2 /3 ? The devices I am using are newish iPhones, Macs - none have previously had issues with the Smarthub so I am not convinced changing the Mode is wise - especially as it looks like 2.4GHz may be the band that is tripping out.

Update: I am getting nowhere by swapping 2.4 and 5GHz channels. I am still seeing a fairly regular dropping out of the wifi, and then within 30 seconds or so my laptop shows it has auto logged on to the wifi channel again. I contacted BT and they also can see a log of drops in wifi once a day - although I am experiencing it more frequently when browsing.

I did a full factory rest of the Smart Hub 2. That doesn't seem to have improved things. It has also flagged (when logging on to the wifi in Settings on an iPhone) that "this network is blocking encrypted DNS traffic". I have not seen this alert on my own WiFi network before. Can anyone help me and explain what this means and if I should tweak my router settings back to how they were? (I assume the reset lost my optimal settings)

Try giving the laptop a static IP address. I believe the DHCP range for the Smart Hub 2 starts at 192.168.1.64, so any address below this will take DHCP out of the equation.

Update:

I swapped out the Smart Hub 2 for a new one sent by BT. That sorted out the issue for a short while, but overnight the firmware autoupdated to v0.31.00.10253-BT and from then on it seems the issues continue - the regular loss of wifi for 3 seconds or so.

My woes continue. I have done a complete swap out of the Smart Hub 2, and taken the BT Disc out of the network. Both 2.4GHz and 5GHz are on. Smart setup is off, and smart channels are off.

My regular 3 - 5 second loss of wifi continues... even to the point of posting on this forum stalled and required a refresh. The log for that event is here repeating 7 times:

16:44:42, 07 Mar. Lan IPv6 Neighbour Discovery events: NEIGHBOR_SOLICIT

Any thoughts on if this is a cause of loss of wifi, and what can be done to stop it?

I note someone else reported this in the BT Community Archive - the same loss of service for 3 seconds and floods of IPv6 Neighbour Discovery events: NEIGHBOR_SOLICIT. No solution was offered then.

@Anonymous I put the macbook onto a manual IPv4 IP address. However the drop outs continue.

As the Smart Hub 2 can't split the bands I tried working with just 5GHz (switching off 2.4GHz) but unfortunately some of my devices need 2.4GHz band.

I'm having the exact same issues. I've been talking with BT for 3 weeks now. They've swapped my Smart Hub, they've checked the line and now i have a tech guru coming on Saturday. Its also affecting my wired conections too.

If you have an old Hub kicking around it might be worth trying that for a few days. Although it's highly unlikely that two SH2s would have the same fault. But having said that, I had two HH5s that randomly dropped 5GHz in the same way, so it's not impossible. But if you try a different variation of Hub & still get the same issue, it's almost certainly going to be down to your environment.

If you have DV & are tied to the SH2, you could turn off it's WiFi & DHCP server & connect the other Hub by ethernet to serve the internal network. You'll need to change the IP address of the second router away from 192.168.1.254 or it will clash with the SH2.

You could also change the WiFi SSID & password to match the SH2 so you don't have to reconnect all your clients.
