ASUS Router Issues

Hi all,

Hoping that someone here can help me as I am totally stumped.

I have just moved to a new house and have had BT FTTP installed. I quickly discarded my home hub and set up my ASUS RT-AX88U, which I need for a) the Ethernet ports and b) because it’s better (or so I hoped). I also need a second router in the house so I connected up a RT-AX55 via an Ethernet cable, which i put into Access Point mode with the same SSID and password. Everything seemed to work ok initially, but now the main router keeps dropping the internet connection: for instance today it happened twice when I was making a WhatsApp call from an iPhone. The only remedy appears to be restarting the router. Any ideas why this may be happening? It’s so unpredictable in when it happens, but typically it does when I’m actively browsing / streaming / on WiFi calls.

I had hoped that second ASUS router would sort this as this had been previously happening when I was trying to use the original home hub and/or an old Netgear router as the second one (with DHCP server disabled). It didn’t happen when I had different SSIDs on each router but did as soon as put them on the same one. I had assumed it was happening because of the incompatibility between the different makes, but now that it’s happening with two ASUS routers I’m not so sure.

I could be wrong but I think everything was working ok with the two ASUS setup until I recently added a Vodafone Sure Signal to my setup (connected via Ethernet) and since then the problem returned. I could have that wrong or it could be coincidental, but thought I’d put down everything I can think of.

Any ideas would be most welcome. Is it possible that something is interfering with the main router, which causes it to drop connection?

Thanks!

Rob

It seems that Sure Signal is being dropped by Vodafone .No idea how this works but I'd suspect this is more than a coincident.

2. With iOS 14 Apple introduced Private Addressing into their wifi settings and this can cause all sorts of issues especially as the default is ON. For your home wifi this must be turned off in my view as each time your devices connect to the wifi they get another ip address assigned and will eventually fill the allocation table within the router. I don't think that this is a particular issue with Asus though as my DSL-AC68U copes OK. However , Asus normally cope well with reconnecting between the main router and it's APs but with Private Addressing who knows.

Thanks a lot for coming back @TimCurtis .

1. I agree the Sure Signal is getting shut down, but for boring reasons they are keeping it open for my company’s corporate access so strictly speaking it should work. It would be infuriating if this was causing the issues as I do need that, but am testing today by turning it off.

2. Ok that’s interesting, I’ll test that as well. I would have hoped that the ASUS and its updated firmware would have been able to deal with that though.

thanks again

I updated the firmware in the hope that would fix it but alas not. Unfortunately I can’t swap the routers as the second one doesn’t have enough Ethernet ports.

yep, ONT lights are as you suggest.

Things seem to be working since the Sure Signal has been disconnected. But I don’t think that it’s an issue with that device specifically, as I said I had a similar issue when I was trying to use different routers on the same SSID.
