Intermittent Failure to Get Ring Tone After Dialling

Several times recently I have dialled a number on my PSTN phone, but following transmission of the last digit, have heard only dial tone rather than, as I'd expect, a ring tone. I should perhaps add that as usual, dial tone was heard at the start of this process.

So far the situation has resolved after a few minutes but I wonder whether this intermittent fault it is the harbinger of worse to come. Also I'm concerned that I could be unable to make an emergency call in a timely manner.

I've experienced the problem on both a corded and a cordless phone so I don't think it's handset-related.

I may (try to) ring it in to BT, but thought that I would see first whether anyone else experienced this and/or knows the probable cause.
