Thank you. Yes - I agree! So, I have been using Connect manually and changing the settings for incoming and outgoing to mail.btinternet.com. Sadly that doesn't work! There has been comment that sometimes this happens and if one waits a few days it rights itself. It's been 24 hours now -I am not holding my breath. What I am really cross about is that I am paying for this service with through Microsoft Office 365 and I can't use the service!

For years my btinternet.com email address has been added to Microsoft Outlook. After changing my BT email password on Monday 29 June I can no longer access my email account in Outlook. After long sessions with BT Chat Line (who tell me they have closed my incident) and Outlook Chat, I have received an email from Outlook to tell me:

Also, I would like to inform you that Microsoft has removed the ability to connect new accounts to Outlook.com from May 10, 2021. Accounts that were connected before May 10, 2021, will continue to sync as usual.

Can anybody comment on this? Does anyone have any advice as to how I can include my btinternet.com address in Outlook ?

Thanks.

@Junep There are two uses of the term Outlook. There is outlook.com [website] which is the replacement for hotmail.com - I think this is what no longer allows connection to other email accounts. If I log into my hotmail.com address it takes me there.

Then there is Outlook [2007-2016 and 365] which is software, often part of the Office suite of programs but can be used on its own. That has nothing to do with Outlook.com - as far as I can see. You can add any email address to that, and I do, quite often. This is a grown-up piece of software that has many facilities.

Office 365 seems to have problems with BT email in that it seems to force the servers to incorrect Yahoo settings.

Make sure the settings are correct and that it is using mail.btinternet.com as both the incoming and outgoing server.

I re-installed 365 on one of my laptops yesterday, including Outlook. It didn't work, at first, because the password had changed and we had forgotten what it was. Then, as @licquorice says, the default offered for server settings was wrong - I think it had not ticked the SMTP box on outgoing mail. All is fine now.

Thanks again. I have tried using the 'Add account' in Microsoft Office 365 and I have used the Control Panel for Mail. In the first it does not recognise my btinternet.com address using the correct password (because I am logged in AOK to BT webmail) and in the control panel, using manual set up it gives me a message that it cannot create the pst file because the file path is too long! I am not technologically savvy to know what that means! Thanks for your support.

In Windows 10 there is another "app" called "Mail" which is not Outlook. I open Outlook from its own icon and then it usually starts up the auto log process. At that point you can change to manual. @licquorice will correct me if I've not got this right - but these settings work for me.

Very annoying as it another log in to get to BT webmail mail instead of it just sitting there pinned to the screen. I have learnt a lot! Thanks for trying!

Try this.

Stop Outlook trying to connect and also any other mail apps on phones etc. Change your email password in webmail, wait at least an hour to give the servers a chance to sync and then try again with Outlook using the new password.

No guarantees but it sometimes works when passwords haven't synced properly.

That error message usually refers to a faulty .pst file. I used to use the Inbox Repair Tool (almost every day) - you run it 3-4 times and eventually it clears issues. But when I moved to 365 and un-installed Outlook 2013 I've not had it since.

https://recoverit.wondershare.com/email-tips/fix-outlook-error-0x80040119.html

I have not had any replies to my most recent post. So, I thought that I would just vent my extreme frustration here! The local computer shop who have served me very well over the years have told me that BT are a nightmare and that there is probably no way that I can continue to use my BTinternet.com address with Microsoft Office. They recommend that I change my email address to one that will sync with Microsoft Office. So, sorry BT but after some 20 years it looks like you will be losing me as a customer. It may take me some time to set all this up as I have no idea how to do that but I am sure that I will receive expert advice which is more than I have received from BT. I find it outrageous that, apparently, BT are now refusing to allow synchronisation with anybody other than themselves - a really closed shop which I thought we had all moved away from long ago. I am saddened.

Thanks gspearson. I will ask them. When I added my btinternet account to Microsoft Office 365 some 18 months ago it went in straight away - I have not had a problem since even when changing passwords. I just find it unbelievable that neither BT nor Microsoft can provide me with any guidance as to why this is happening. This has taken me hours and hours and it is still not sorted. At the moment I just think that shame should be heaped on both providers for advertising services which are unintelligble to the normal consumer. I have no idea what a pst file is nor why I need one nor why it appears to be causing all these problems. Neither BT or Microsoft have offered any guidance on this in spite of my specifically mentioning it in my many many many online chats. Thanks for your support.

I am trying to add my btinternet.com account to Microsoft Office Outlook email organiser. I have gmail included. It will now not allow me to include my btinternet.com account. I have replied to your pst email separately because I saw it before I saw this. I am completely at my wits end. I do not understand why something that was working perfectly OK has now ceased completely. I am forced back onto BT webmail which is clunky and slow. Thanks for your support.
