BT WiFi on the move - no longer signing in automatically

When I originally installed the BT WiFi app (on a Blackberry, as it happens, many years ago) logging on to BT WiFi, launch of the app and signing in took place automatically if I stopped in the region of a hotspot for a few moments, so I always had best connectivity.

Now with my Samsung Galaxy S21 (same with previous S9) I have to choose the WiFi and open the app manually - it then signs in as normal.

Is there any way I can get the automation of this process back? Some things are only appreciated fully when they are gone.....

It's a configuration option within the app settings.

I have that set to auto. It is the initial recognition of the BT WiFi environment that seems not to be happening.
