I bought a iPhone to Ethernet cable and plugged in it to the router, on the Netflix speed test I got 1.1gb ( paying for 900mb) so it’s clear the WiFi connection is pulling it down, I know not to expect the same speed wirelessly. I’ll look into it further as I seem to remember you can switch WiFi channels via hub manager

I have the my BT app latest version on both my iPhone 15 and an iPad, there was a major update on the app a few weeks back and now when I run the in app speed test it never seems to complete the test (usually gets to about 22% complete) the results always show I’m getting well below my guaranteed stay fast speed. I reported a fault to BT and the advisor says I’m reaching well over my guaranteed speed. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Have you tried a different speed test provider?

https://fast.com/

Also, is your iPhone running the very latest iOS?

Bearing in mind you are testing over WiFi, how close to the router are you when you carry out the test?

If you have a laptop or desktop PC, the only reliable speed test, will usually be via a connected ethernet cable.

What broadband speed are you actually paying for and what is your average speed when you conduct your own speed tests?

Thanks for the reply,

none of the speed test providers showed the speed I should be reaching but I know they test differently . I had no problems with the app before it updated. My IOS is all up to date. BT said I’m getting the correct speeds. The issue seems to be the app, was just wondering if anyone else had the same issue. I’m paying for 900mb with minimum guaranteed speed of 700

I give up on the BT speed test a long time ago due to to it's unreliability.

As the Kimbo said the Netflix owned Fast.com is just as good and more reliable

Just ran the speed test on the app again and it recorded download 552 and upload 41, this morning it was 352 and 110 so I’m confident it’s the app. The link you posted recorded 440.

So the next obvious thing to do is if possible, grab a laptop or PC and connect it directly to the router via Ethernet cable. Run the speed test and if you’re getting the 900mbps or thereabouts, you haven’t got a complaint that BT would uphold because it would come down purely to your WiFi connection as being the problem.

I don’t have a laptop or similar, I’ve already spoken to BT who say I’m reaching my correct speed, my post was to enquire if anyone else thought the app speed test was wrong, it never completes to 100% as it used to before the update, I’ll probably stop using it, thanks for the replies

My guess is, the speeds logged by the App are not wrong, they are recording the WiFi speed that your iPhone is receiving.

As I type this, I’ve just run a speed test through Fast.com and it’s recording 450mbps to my iPhone and I’m sat 8 feet away from the router. My laptop connected to Ethernet, is recording 510mbps (I’m on 500mbps FTTP).

Select the WiFi that you’re using and scroll down to forget this network and toggle off. Next, toggle off WiFi and turn it back on. This will clear any cache. Rejoin your network by putting back in your password and then run the speed test again. I just did this myself and sitting in the same spot with my iPhone, the speed App is showing 500mbps. It might work for you, it might not.

The BT App tests the speeds to your BT hub. It does not test the Wifi speed or Ethernet connection speeds to your devices after the hub.

Because it tests the line speed to the hub this is what BT use to check if their "Stay Fast Guarantee", which is the speed to the hub is being met.

I have just used the BT App speed test and it appears to be working correctly and shows the speeds I would expect for my Fibre package.

I also checked on Fast.com and it shows a slower Wifi speed test which I would expect. It shows slightly slower on an Ethernet connected device but is well within what I would have expected.

If you are not getting the speeds you would expect from your package when using the BT app and the test frequently stalls I would suggest that first you restart your devices if you have not already done that since the BT app update.

If you have done that you should uninstall it and restart your device then reinstall it and run the test.

If it is still not showing the correct speeds it could be that the FTTP contention which is 30 users on the same line could be affecting the shown speeds. Try it either early morning or late at night when there are less users on line to see what it states then albeit I would not expect such differences as those that you have seen.

The hub manager lets you turn off "Smart Wireless" on 2.4Ghz allowing you to select one of the following channels 1. 6 and 11 which are the only channels that do not overlap. Use a wireless analyser to establish the least congested and choose that one.

It is your device, not the hub that decides whether to use 2.4Ghz or the 5Ghz. You can however turn off the 2.4Ghz which would force your device to use 5Ghz but be aware that 5Ghz does not have the range that 2.4Ghz has so you may find that you lose the signal depending on your house layout and construction.

Since they updated the MyBT app a few weeks back you only get the speed test results showing direct from the hub. Previously you used to get the hub speeds and a separate one for the device you were doing the speed test on. Probably had too many people complaining about the WiFi speed even though the hub speeds were over the guarantee.

Many people seem easily persuaded to give BT more money for a faster (download) service they’ll probably never benefit from. 100Mbps or even 50Mbps is ample for most users. Now if a higher or even symmetrical upload was offered, that may be useful. Certainly if one is uploading to cloud based services 100s of MBytes of videos and photos or whatever..
