Norton Cyber Security

My laptop has worked fine for years but had its life extended by a year last October when Windows 10 came to the supposed end of its worthwhile life. Then, in the recent past, BT included NCS in my products bundle. After accepting a recommendation from NCS, I blocked a driver on my laptop. Since then, I have lost internet access on the laptop and at one stage, the troubleshooter indicated I needed a certain driver (disappeared too quickly for me to get details), so the NCS appears to have cost me access to the internet. Even if I find out the driver to install, will I be able to reinstall it when I don’t have access to the internet? PS- I am 72 and not very tech savvy, so any help offered, while gratefully received, should be in very simple terms. Thanks in anticipation.

If Norton has blocked it, (rather than deleted it), it should be possible to unblock it.

I haven’t used Norton for many years and I can’t make you any guarantees it is safe to restore it, but it should be possible to go into Norton and look for something like a Quarantine list or History section etc. Then find the driver in the list of blocked items and there should be an option to restore it or make an exception for it etc. (You may have to right click on it or the option may be in a menu at the top etc.)

With a bit of luck that should reverse the blocking.

If the driver is that out of date, however, you really need to go to the laptop manufacturer’s website and update the driver. Do not download a driver from a third-party site, only use the manufacture’s site.

The extended support of Windows 10 is an expensive paid for extra intended for business. Are you sure it’s still under security support? Might be time for a new laptop.

If you are not very tech savvy it might be best to take your laptop to somebody who knows what they are doing however if you want to try and restore the missing driver you should do the following.

If Norton has disabled the driver, what ever it is, Norton should be able to re enable it. You would need to check the Norton settings or help pages how to do that.

If Norton has deleted the driver you could try the following.

This is for Windows 10 but is more or less the same on all versions of Windows.

Press the Windows key and X then press the M key. This will open the Device Manger.

Look down the list. If there is anything in the list with an red exclamation mark beside it click on it. This will take you to the where the missing driver is missing from.

Once there right click on the devices that has the exclamation mark and it will give you an option to "Search automatically for drivers" and " Browse my Computer for drivers".

Click on the Search computer for drivers and hopefully the search will find an reinstall the driver for you.

If that does not work post back what you have found and it may be possible to give more informed help.
