As already stated , your line is working within the predicted range , so it’s not ‘faulty’ , the fact it’s slower than before could be due to crosstalk , again this isn’t a fault , it’s an unfortunate side effect of others joining FTTC on the same FTTC cab as you.

If you had a phone service , and it were noisy , you could ask for that to be investigated, and any repair needed to remove the noise could improve the broadband too ( assuming there is a noise fault ) but without a phone service , how do you report a noisy line ?

If you report your broadband slow , and they can ‘see’ a line defect when they test , then OR would be dispatched to fix it , but if the test is OK and your speed is as predicted ( and it is ) then OR wouldn’t be tasked to investigate…

if you are paying for F2 and only getting F1 speeds , then unless the better upload speed is important, then downgrade to F1 from F2….at the moment your line may or may not be faulty but your ISP says it’s OK and your speed reduction isn’t necessarily a fault.

There was an option you could pay for ( if you are convinced the line has issues ) where BT would get the line investigated , if it were faulty , you didn’t pay and the fault was fixed , if there wasn’t a fault but your own setup was less than perfect , then they would correct any ‘internal’ defects that were your responsibility but you pay.

At the moment your line is delivering the best speed it can handle , it happens to be less than it was in the past, and at the low end of the predicted range but within that range.

Have you even followed any of the previous advice to eliminate any possible internal issues ?, no ISP simply arranges an investigation into a line because the consumer is convinced it could be better without some evidence, and stating it used to be faster isn’t evidence of a fault , basically , if BT investigated ( using OR ) checked everything out , and nothing is wrong , and your speed is the best it can be ( because there is nothing to fix because nothing is defective ) you don’t see an improvement, and BT/OR had the expense of proving nothing was wrong..in those circumstances the work done ,for no reason other than to convince you , is chargeable, but obviously if they come out , find a defect that the testing regime couldn’t detect , the visit and repair are free…

Ultimately you may have to agree to pay if no fault is on the line , but you want it looked at anyway

If your gut feeling is proved to be correct , and there is an external issue that can be ‘fixed’ , you don’t pay , but it’s a risk , they want agreement that if there isn’t a fault , you pay for the unnecessary visit and time wasted looking for non existent faults.

Its a bit like taking your car to the garage and wanting the noise from the rear investigating , they spend hours looking , but can’t find anything ….they charge you for the time spent .
The noise comes back , you immediately drive back to the garage to complain, the mechanic looks inside and says ‘ is the noise only when your mother in law is in the car ?’

Apology's to 1970’s comedians everywhere.

Cabinet ports

Is there any way of knowing when a faster cabinet port becomes available? From 2012 to 2017 I was with BT and would regularly get 65 to 72Mbs download speed. Switched to Talktalk in 2017 for cheaper price, and my speed dropped to 35 to 50Mbs. In 2019 I switched back to BT as I started earning more money and TT contract ended. Now on BT, same address as 2012, my speed is anywhere between 13 to 49Mbs.

If I use the address checker, it says I can get fibre 2 at 49 to 72Mb, my next door neighbour can only get fibre 1 at 49Mb, and my other neighbour on the opposite side can get fibre 2 at 55 to 72Mb. Yet when I log in to see my broadband upgrade deals, it only shows 49 to 51Mb.

I spoke with a friend who works at BT and she said they'll have moved me to a slower port in the cabinet, and won't be able to move me back until a port becomes free

I use Skelmersdale exchange, cabinet 28 apparently. So I was just wondering how do I find out when a faster port is available?

Your friend at BT is clearly clueless. All ports in the cabinet are the same speed, capped at a maximum of 80Mbps. If you have selected a fibre1 package your speed will be capped at 55Mbps.

Please post a screenshot of your hub stats and the output of the DSL checker. https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL

You have either been told a lot of nonsense, or you have misunderstood what was said….all ‘ports’ in a ‘fibre’ cabinet are the same , they can all provide 80Mb , because that is the limit Openreach use , but the port speed can be reduced depending on what the ISP has purchased on behalf of their customer , that can be set as 40 , 55 or 80 , but FTTC is ‘rate adaptive’ which means other factors , mainly line length affects the actual connection rate ….so someone who is a long way from the cab , may only get ( for example ) 30Mb , that’s just physics, if they asked to be on an 80Mb connection , the would still only get 30Mb , so they may as well be on a 40Mb profile as that tends to be a little cheaper ….similarly if someone on a very short line was paying for 40 and getting 40 , but wanted to upgrade to faster speed , because the short line can easily deliver 80Mb, on request from the ISP , the port speed can simply be changed from 40 to 80Mb , there is no need to swap the cabinet port, all ports are fundamentally identical

The 330 isn't G.Fast, it's FTTPoD which is an extremely expensive business product where the full cost of the provision is paid costing thousands

If you post your hub stats we can see what is possibly going on. Your line should be capable of the 72 you were seeing previously.

Is there any noise on your line with a quiet line test 17070

If you haven’t already you need to connect in your master socket test port , this will eliminate any possible internal issues ( extension wiring, sockets etc ) and also , preferably with a corded phone , dial 17070 and take the quiet line test, any ‘noise’ , report the line noisy , this only applies if your telephony isn’t DV , but as already stated it could simply be that your connection is affected by crosstalk, which becomes more likely the more users on the FTTC cabinet , this isn’t a fault.

Hi @davidamos

Are you definitely on Fibre 2 (<80 mbps) and not Fibre 1 (<55 mbps). Looking at your maximum rate it appears to be Fibre 1.

The hub speed is not fixed at 55mb and up speed is 19mb confirming package is fibre 2 not fibre 1

@davidamos

Broadband only may save you up to £5pm not £30 as you only save as not having ability to make/receive calls but you still pay line rental which is included n the package price

Yep, you definitely won't save £30/m

Cabinets are located at strategic positions to serve quite a wide area.

Yep, I'm paying for fibre 2. Have been since 2019, yet my speed hasn't gone above around 50Mbs once in that time.

My last bill was £61 for broadband at £44, inclusive calls to landline and mobile at £17. Renewed broadband only for £31.99
