Just had fibre installed works all good, ver tidy wiring in house , just question about drilled hole

So all installed today all working good, placed ont where i wanted, was a really nice guy . Just a question about the hole drilled for the cable , It was not filled out side or inside , Its only about 10 mm hole I think, Not a big deal, but want to fill it . Would you think some poly filla around the cable be ok to fill or do you recommend something else ?

@leeea12345 As mentioned by @Les-Gibson , expanding foam is great but make sure you use one that is suitable for outdoor hole filling.

If it is only a 10mm hole you would be better using an outdoor silicone sealant. It can be smoothed around the hole and unlike expanding foam will not need to be trimmed. You can get it as a clear sealant or in various colours that may help it to blend in.

The Installer should’ve used an Internal Lead In Kit.

Also he should’ve used Clear Silicone to fill the hole on the outside.

Both really basic things so sounds like it’s a bodge job.

I have decided i will be contacting bt regarding this . I have a looked at the hole drilled , and there is some brick damage , which i am not sure if that should have been taken care of . He did drill from inside out, so of course he could not see exactly where the drill would come out , and maybe i am a little fussy . I just do not see why i should have to mess about doing the hole filling .

He did do a good job in running cable nice and tidy inside to where i wanted it, its just the hole not being filled and the brick damage. Am i being too fussy i am not sure . Here is the picture of outside

I am not qualified to comment on the actual run off the cables but as regards the brick being damaged, unfortunately when you drill a brick the exit hole will inevitable splinter slightly because of the way a brick is made.

Where possible when drilling bricks you should start on the visible side of the brick so that the hole is neat and the splintering will be on the unseen side.

This is not always possible when drilling into a house because it is frequently difficult to measure/gauge where the drill will enter the house so the safest and easiest way to drill is to start at the point inside the house where you want the cable to enter the property.

As regards you being too fussy, only you can decide but it should have been sealed with silicone and looking at the rest of the pointing and the general state of the bricks that can been seen in the photo I would say yes possibly you are being too fussy.

Are you being too fussy, probably yes , the installer should have sealed the external cable hole with silicone to prevent possible water ingress , and arguably you could ask BT to get OR to return and do this five minute job , ( but do you want to wait in for a few hours for them to arrive or just do it yourself ? ) but the rest ( brick slightly damaged) you cannot expect to drill into bricks without potentially a small area of ‘damage’ , what do you expect them to do , rebuild the wall around the cable ?….as said you could ask for the hole to be sealed with silicone, and be thought of as pedantic, expecting anything to be done about the brick goes beyond that and into the realms of fantasy

I would suggest that the brick damage makes it easier to answer your original question, get some ready mixed sand and cement from a DIY shop and use that to rectify both problems at once.

That’s Shocking…!

I’d be embarrassed and ashamed if I did that.

I can forgive the Brick Blow Out, especially with the cheap s… Drills Openreach were giving out by the time I left.

The Internal EZ Bend Cable has had the Outer Sheathing Completely Stripped back to the Micron Core Layer, that should only be stripped back to the Micron Core Layer when used Internally, and on the External Wall should have it’s Outer Sheathing left in place as it protects the Cable from UV Rays.

Also it has no Drip Loop on it, with no silicone rain water will run down that into the wall cavity and potentially cause Damp.

I’d request someone revisit and redo that.

Thanks for the input, have called bt, I have been told open watch will be coming out from now till thursday to inspect the work on the outside . will keep posted

You can get plastic inserts that go on the cable and push into the holes. They look a bit like a mushroom.

For filling you can use general silicon sealer, that'll stop anything getting in or out, heat, spiders etc. Much easier to pump into the holes tan try to feed filler in.

You can tidy the inside with filler if you like for smooth finish.

Why should the OP have to do that, his CP has paid Openreach to do a job, which they should do to the Quality Standard.

If you paid a Garage to replace your Brake Pads, Discs, Oil Filter and Alternator Belt but got it home to find they hadn’t replaced the Belt and Brake Pads would you not return to the Garage and ask they do what you paid them to do or would you buy the parts, again for a second time and fit them yourself even though you’ve already paid someone else to do it?

If the Openreach Engineer and or Contractor who did that poor excuse for an Installation is doing that on every job they do then clearly it needs highlighting so they can be retrained.
