Fibre Essential suddenly dropped from 24Mbps to 18Mbps - precursor of Full Fibre?

We have had a very stable Fibre Essential connection for several years at around 24Mbps (with the router reporting 25-27Mbps and the BT website guaranteeing 20+Mbps).

Recently this dropped to 18Mbps and I noticed that when looking at products on the BT.com website they now only guarantee 18Mbps.

I also spoke to an OpenReach engineer a few months ago who confirmed that they've completed the cabling for fibre to the home in our village and it should appear 'soon' as an option.

Are the two connected? Is more bandwidth being reserved for FTTH connections? And how is throttling done at the cabinet, anyway?

If Openreach FTTP is soon to be available, it’s got nothing to do with your apparent reduction in FTTC speeds ,if your speeds are less than they once were , it could be ‘crosstalk’ , as more customers take up service in a FTTC ‘cabinet’ , the greater the likelihood that crosstalk becomes an issue , or it could be that your line has a minor defect that is impacting speed, and (AFAIK) if real data from your connection is available ( rather than a mathematical model of the line ) then the speed guaranteed etc. are based on the actual line performance not the guesstimate, so a poorly performing line will see a reduced guarantee, remove the reason for the poor performance, the real world speed improves and so does the guarantee speeds.

You need to look at the router stats to understand if you line is underperforming or it’s simply the new normal

Thanks - that's helpful. We did a lot of work on the cabling and home infrastructure to get the connection up to 24Mbps (from about 1Mbps downstream originally before FTTC!) but we are a long way (~1km) from the cabinet so there could be a problem. And crosstalk may also be an issue.
What router stats should I look at?

in order for the forum members to help please can you post the stats from your router (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser) and if HH5 then go to troubleshooting then helpdesk and if HH6/SH2 then advanced settings then technical log information .

Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
