My hub is flashing purple and the open reach box has no lights on at all. I’ve unplugged it overnight and there is power from socket but the broadband just won’t work. Tried calling BT, was on hold for ages then got cut off!

It sound like the power unit has failed, there have been a few similar reports.

If its a 12 Volt power supply, you may be able to locate a suitable replacement.

If you can describe which ONT you have, another forum member may be able to suggest an alternative power unit. Does it look like this?

It’s a different one to your photo.

it says open reach and has a power, LOS, PON and LAN bit which usually light up. Lights are out and I’ve unplugged it and tried the reset but it seems to be completely dead

Does it have a separate battery backup unit like in this picture?

Not sure which one you have. Either way its likely to be the power unit that has failed, so unless you have a suitable replacement, you will have to book a visit from Openreach via BT. You can either ring up, or report the fault online.

I think most of the power units are 12 Volt,

Most routers over the years have used a 12V PSU, so worth trying any you may have kicking around. Just a case of matching the DC jack so don't force anything that doesn't easily fit.
