Is Fibre 2 Full Fibre?

I've seen a few posts about Fibre 2 installs suggesting that it is the full fibre optic cable package (BT now describes Fibre 2 as 'Full Fibre 2' as well). However when speaking to a BT customer service rep they said that Fibre 2 wasn't actually full fibre but was based on the old copper network. Can anyone clarify this? The reason I ask was that I had ordered Fibre 100 but was thinking I might change to Fibre 2 as it is cheaper and would give me to option to upgrade down the line if the optic cables were already in place. Cheers.

As above, it can be either. They key to what's actually being offered if the presence or absence of "Full" in the description. The price difference between Full Fibre 2 & Full Fibre 100 seems to be £2 pm.

With Full Fibre 2 to you will get 80/20Mb, with Fibre 2 that will rapidly diminish the further you are from the cabinet.

Thanks for the quick replies folks. Much appreciated.

I still find the BT Broadband packages pages confusing as they seem to be calling all packages including the Fibre 1 (which I'm currently on) and even the slowest Fibre Essential @36MB as 'Full Fibre'.

Perhaps its only when you complete the order they adjust the package down to standard fibre if you don't have the optic cable infrastructure in your area or am I missing something?

If you are in an area where Openreach Full Fibre is available then any fibre tier product would use the full fibre infrastructure.

This is highlighted with the Full Fibre in the product name (example shown below is in an area where only Full Fibre is available to illustrate the different bandwidth tiers).

Choosing any of the below would be delivered to the property via Full Fibre

Thanks Guru. That is very helpful. If I understand you correctly I am only seeing the full fibre options as my postcode dictates that I would be plumbed into the new optic network no matter which speed I chose.

If you are only seeing Full Fibre options then that means copper is no longer being sold. So yes, any package you opt for will be a new ONT installation. That will likely mean a compulsory move to Digital Voice if you have a landline, so bear that in mind also.

Thanks rbz. I have to say you guys have all been very helpful to a newbie. Now that I understand my options I'm inclined to downgrade the Fibre 100 package I ordered yesterday to the Fibre 2 as it may be enough for our household (providing BT allow me to change the order at this stage that is).

Changjng the order now would push your install back by at least a week. Better leave it until installed and then downgrade within 14 days as that would happen withinin 24hrs.

Full Fibre 100 ‘speed’ is actually 150Mb , and because it’s FTTP , that’s the speed you get , no distance related speed reduction you may get with ADSL or FTTC , the pricing images posted suggest that there is a £2/month difference between Fibre 2 and Fibre 100 , but very confusingly, the £2 doesn’t provide an extra 20Mb speed , but nearly doubles it from 80Mb to 150Mb.

F100 may still be more that needed , and any saving is helpful , but it’s significantly ‘faster’ than its name suggests

Hi mate,

I know this is an old post but just thought I’d share my recent experience.

I have been on Fibre 2 for around 30 months (6 months into a new 24month contract) paying £29.99pm and getting a download speed of 66-73mbps

I randomly browsed the site after looking at my bill. In the ‘your products’ section it has a ‘your offers’ tab, I clicked it and seen I had an upgrade offer to Full Fibre 100 getting 150mbps for no extra charge, free installation & same price I have been paying.

for the same price it’s quite a big speed jump which I’m made up with.

I was confused after ordering the upgrade as I received an installation date and that the engineer would need to drill a hole in the wall to get the cable in.

This suggests the Full Fibre 100 is provided via a different cable than the previous Fibre 2. I can only assume

1) It’s sent via a Fibre Optic cable, or

2) That Fibre Optic has recently been laid in my area, or

3) That Fibre 1 & 2 are provided via an old copper cable

I dont know whether the free upgrade is due to me being a returning customer when signing a new contract or if Fibre Optic will replace the old cables. Either way, more than doubling my speed for the same price was a no brainer.

Fibre to the cab , FTTC and fibre to the premises FTTP can both deliver 40,55,80Mb , only FTTP can deliver faster speeds ( ignoring Gfast ) , BT differentiate calling FTTP ‘full fibre’ .

Years ago , Virgin called their hybrid fibre/copper broadband ‘fibre’ , so others using a similar fibre/hybrid system used the same term to advertise their FTTC products , and TBH , if someone was sold 40 Mb ( for example ) and obtained that speed , does it matter if it’s FTTC or FTTP ?.

Now that FTTP is becoming commonplace, full fibre or similar is the term to look for FTTP , and if both are available FTTP is the default network, even if 40Mb is ordered.
