I have been connected to the full fibre 500 as a new customer this morning. Do I have to wait for the speeds to settle because as it stands speeds are struggling to reach 100 mps? Don’t want to ring bt if it is a bit of a waiting game

Welcome to this user forum for BT Retail phone and broadband customers.

No, you get full speed right away, but only if you are directly connected to the home hub with a fast PC with a 1GB network card, and a suitable Ethernet cable.

It looks to me you are probably connected by wireless, or the wrong specification PC network card, perhaps one with only a 100mb interface.

You are not going to get anything like the full speed on wireless, only on devices that are directly connected using Ethernet.

No ISP will guarantee wireless connections.

The advertised speed is only up to the BT Home hub, anything after that is not covered by any agreement, as its the responsibility of the end user. For most people, a 100mb fibre package is more than enough unless you have a very large household who use a lot of bandwidth.

You are unlikely to get anything like the full speed over wireless, on a single device.

It was never intended that people get full speed on all devices, especially on a wireless connection. The intention is to allow that bandwidth to be shared among family members and multiple devices, without each user noticing any slowdown.

Here is a quote from old post from a BT moderator.

"I think for the first time ever we are in a situation whereby the speed you can now get through Full Fibre outperforms the capabilities of many devices.

The Smart hub 2 does not come with Wi-Fi 6 but this is something we are looking to include in our next generation of Hub. I don't have any info as to when we will launch a new router by Wi-Fi 6 will bring some improvement.

As an example of what I mean in terms of devices not being able to support the full breadth of speed available on Full Fibre , take a look at the table below. This is just for a couple of Apple Smart Phones and Tablets along with popular Samsung models,

You need to run a speed test with a wired device, as BT will not accept speed test results over a wireless connection.

Bear in mind, this is only a customer to customer help forum, so if you are not happy with the wireless speed you are getting, you will have to raise the issue direct with BT.

You would not be the only person posting here, who have paid for a 900Mb connection, and expected it to improve wireless speeds.

I can't imagine why but there have indeed been recent reports of new FTTP installations taking a day or so to reach full speed. But you must test over ethernet.

You devices might not be the limiting factor but your local environment might be. You also need to ask yourself what you are doing on a mobile device over WiFi that "needs" 500Mb.

Where did I say I needed 500 speeds for my mobile devices? I said that the speeds on them were disappointing and I have been vindicated because BT have identified a fault and are sending an engineer.

The question I need to ask myself is what speeds to I need to effectively carry out mine and my wife’s business effectively and the answer was 500 hence why I chose it

If you are running a business, then that is not permitted on a BT Residential account. You need to change over to a BT Business account. You will get a better SLA, and can claim for lost business if a service affecting fault causes loss.

You can swap to BT Business, and get any cancellation charges refunded, once your BT Business account has been active for a period.

See https://community.bt.com/t5/Bills-Packages/Moving-from-BT-residential-broadband-to-BT-Business/m-p/2304896#M157824

Its worth reading that whole thread, as it relates to running a business.

There are lots of extra business related facilities on BT Business, which are there to make things run smoothly.

Unlike ADSL/VDSL ( FTTC ) there is no training period where the line is ‘optimised’ , FTTP is not ‘rate adaptive’ , so no variation in line speed , you get what you pay for , however that doesn’t mean there is no possibility of the wrong profile being selected ( so human error ) but that’s unlikely as the FTTP product sold as 100Mb is actually 150Mb , so if you were given that profile your speed is still too low , or it could be , although very rare an equipment fault , your ONT faulty , affecting just you , or an OLT fault affecting all others on the same ‘splitter’ as you .

As pointed out , using WiFi as a speed measure is unsatisfactory, and isn’t normally accepted as ‘proof’ of an issue , measuring with wired devices and/or using the appropriate supplier provided tool is the appropriate method, anyway as your ISP has confirmed an issue hopefully it’s quickly fixed.
