Hi,

Until recently there has been a lot of fibre related working conducted by Openreach near to where I live, including my estate. The works have now been completed and Openreach are now concentrating on the areas further down the road.

When I do a search for my postcode, I get the results that build is planned between now and December 2026 but if I do a search using the postcode of our neighbouring roads or estates, it shows as FTTP is available now.

FYI there are some works going on in our estate (additional floor being built on top).

Is it just the case of the database not being updated or does the FTTP enablement require installing new cables for the MDU's?

Are you in an MDU?

If so that’s done by a different build Team.

MDU’s are more complex as Openreach need to get Permissions, Wayleaves, etc from Build Owners.

As stated , MDU are a different because of the complexity of providing service , so it’s entirely possible to have a MDU , surrounded by SDU ( single dwelling units , houses basically ) and the SDU can order FTTP but the MDU ( multiple dwelling unit ) cannot ….typically Openreach have code powers to provide FTTP access points in the footpath ( joint boxes or telegraph poles ) and the only permission required to deliver FTTP to a SDU ( to attach a wire or dig the excavate the front garden ) is the customer ordering services , so permission isn’t going to be a problem ,

with MDU’s it’s totally different, if it’s a modern MDU ( so all the existing copper cables were originally provided as the building was under construction) there is no easy retro fit path for fibre , plus the freeholder, managing agent etc. need to give permission, grant wayleaves etc , because the work required is in common areas ( corridors, risers , etc ) and individual residents cannot grant permission to work in theses areas , that has to be from the freeholder, building owner / management etc

Enough capacity is provided for the MDU when the general area is covered ,but the MDU is not shown as ready for service even though the neighbouring SDU are ……eventually, should permission be sought and granted, the MDU is ‘block wired’ , and the individual MDU addresses can order FTTP , but it could be years after the SDU can order FTTP , and if the building owner never grants permission, it may never be available.

Openreach are lobbying to try and make it easier to supply MDU's with FTTP.

https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2024/04/openreach-seek-changes-to-make-building-fttp-broadband-into-flats-easier.html
