A SASA has 32 Fibres.

The Cables Openreach commonly use for Overhead Fibre is the COF215 ULW Cable, which comes in various Fibre Sizes from 12F to 96F. The most commonly used one is 36F and 48F.

Depending on which side of the Splitter that cables on it could potentially be at full capacity.

So long story short, for 10 years now, I have been on the end of an Exchange Only Line, with 1Mb ADSL. Nightmare.

Anyway the farm next door sold off some land, and a development of 4 new houses are going in.

Last week new poles were installed, and chatting to the guys as 32 core fibre cable was installed. The DB is 2 poles from me.

What are the chances of me getting fibre at any point, now the cable runs right past my house. The guy said they would be able to run a FTTP from the DB on the 2nd pole no issues as there is capacity. Of course, all the checkers just say no FTTP available in my postcode. That is DD2 5PD

10 years is a long wait and to see the fibre within 1m of my house is good but what are the chances.

Unlikely to be available, as its probably not within the scope of the PON.

Also the developer may have entered into an agreement with Openreach, to provide fibre to the flats. That would not include your property.

If the new developer has contributed towards the costs of FTTP , then a CBT etc will no doubt be close by , but unfortunately that doesn’t necessarily help you, new sites are a different build programme to retro build and have a different budget …….once the new build housing has registered addresses etc , and show on availability checkers , if your address shows availability then that great but if not , then you could explore FTTPod , but as the costs for that are from the aggregation node not a splitter node or CBT , so the costs may still be considerable , or if an aggregation node was built close by for the new builds the costs may be much smaller than previously quoted .

Not sure what is meant by DB’s , it’s not really a term used by Openreach in relation to its passive optical networks ( PON ) , the external building blocks are cable chamber joint, Aggregation Node , splitter node and CBT’s , the CBT ( connectorised block terminal) can be considered as the DP ( distribution point ) in the copper network , is the item where the individual ‘lead in’ cable from a pole or joint box in the footpath comes from, the other common item is an IJ ( intermediate joint ) but that’s nothing more than where cables meet and are spliced together ……the term DB is a new one on me .

Unfortunately complexity of connection that will be the hurdle, but new build is not the same , a developer could build housing no where near existing FTTP , and it’s usually reactive build to get fibres just for that development , and if it’s a very small development will likely use spare fibres in existing fibre cables , retro build on the other hand is likely to pickup 10,000’s of homes and businesses , involving new large capacity spine cables ,multiple aggregation nodes , hundreds of splitter nodes , thousands of CBT’s ( obviously built incrementally, as well new headends /OLT etc.

As stated , until the new builds are able to order FTTP , and you can check your own address , you won’t know if your existing property was incorporated into the PON design , but TBH , I think it’s not that likely

Thank you for the reply, that all makes sense. The guys doing the work are a 3rd party, and he kept using these terms. As I am end of line, no other houses were here, so now there will be 4 new houses next door in the development. I will take some photos of what they install and see. At the moment they are splicing into the Underground chamber at the start of the poles about half a mile down the road, this is where a big estate of 100 odd houses, and they have FTTC options only and has been like that since I have been here. The guy said for sure the new cable has 32 fibres and was on about connection points each side of my house. Will see what happens on the poles over the next few days. Will keep and eye on the checker also.

Thanks again.

That’s a Small Prysmian Node Openreach use for Fibre Jointing.

Its either a Splitter or an Intermediate Joint.

Whether you’ll be able to piggy back off it really depends.

So that’s the end of the new poles right at the entrance to the new estate. It will have 5 large 4 bed houses only. That is 3 poles from my house, my pole has nothing the fibre is just rubbing over my pole. I will wonder down the road the other way tomorrow as there is something on a pole in the other direction but could not see when driving. Then there is another 10 poles to just outside the big estate that has FTTC only. However it joins into an underground chamber at that point. This is all new. From my house to the end of the new line with that box in the photo it is 300m and yes line of sight.

So it’s 300m from the nearest Pole on that new site to your house?

If that the case there’s no way you’re getting it as the maximum cable span from a Pole to your house is about 68m if I remember right.

They would probably need to build additional network to get it to you. That could potentially be tens of thousands. Without seeing the Network Maps I could only speculate.

The pole at the site entrance has a device that is installed at the start and end of an aerial cable route , ( an anti creepage device) that suggests the cable runs down the pole and will no doubt move underground in to ducts/jointboxes on the site itself…there is a good chance with such a small development that a single CBT could service the entire development it connected via a small splitter co-located in the same box as the CBT ( ducts running from the box to each new property ) ….that means for that splitter ( or CBT ) to be of any use to servicing your address a new cable would have to run in the opposite direction, so out of the box up the pole and span across from the pole to existing poles or new poles ( if new poles are required to get to your address ) , and although it’s not impossible to do this , it’s an inelegant solution….and not likely to have been part of the ‘plan’ when the network was designed for those new build addresses .

Thank you, that makes sense.

Annoying the guy said no issues connecting me, but then guess they are just contractors.

I see another similar box in the opposite direction on a pole not near any houses at all, just in the middle of the total new run. We live rural so strange. Unless they know something we don’t. Wish I had known maybe I could have paid for a connection at the time. But no way of knowing these things in advance I guess.

It's simply a joint, not strange at all. Cable comes in lengths that need joining.

You say that, but they cut the cable as they were installing it from a large roll. I watched them do this.
