Superfast Broadband

When I check availability as I am looking to move back to BT from Virgin, it shows I can only get fibre2. Yet my neighbour two door away can get ultra fast. We have fibre noads on both poles on our street so why can't I get the ultra speed?

Use the address checker on the page below, and post the results, but edit out your address details first, but leave the exchange name and cabinet number showing.

With a vdsl download of 80. WBC FTTP shows date as unavailable

Then it probably means that there are no spare outlets on the optical splitter. Its possible Openreach may expand the PON, but there are other more experienced forum members who may explain it better.

Post the return from the checker for both yourself and the neighbour who can get FTTP and indicate the proximity, like , attached , immediate next door , (part of the semi detached property ) , same side of road , next door , but detached from each other , neighbours opposite side of road , that type of thing .

If the pole that currently has your copper dropwire serves other properties as well as yourself and those properties can order FTTP then there obviously is an issue , possibly due to some issue with the way your address is recorded….when you put your address in the checker is it shown in exactly the same format as the Royal Mail website entry ?

OK so the neighbour is also fed from cabinet 14 in Dover

The FTTP setting shows as up to 1000 and available date as available.

I can't upload an image as the size of the screenshot is too big to load here.

The property is on the same terrace as me, I'm at 6 they are at 12 (3 doors away)

The address of both properties are exactly as listed on royal mail.

Is the terrace 6 dwellings , No2-No12 ( even numbers ) all served overhead from telegraph poles , ( I ask because sometimes terrace properties are fed from wall block or blocks on the end of terrace property, so the middle of the terrace need wiring that has to cross neighbouring dwellings walls ( that can cause problems with permission ) I’ll assume all dwellings in the terrace are served from poles and not wall blocks, perhaps you can confirm this .

It’s not likely that by design this terrace was split across two PON areas , but it’s possible that a quirk of the way previous copper service was delivered has left No12 in reach of a PON that doesn’t reach to your address , a PON ( passive optical network ) is normally designed to accommodate a certain area , constrained by the existing Openreach infrastructure, the borders of a PON sometimes seem strange because you can have near neighbours on either side of the boundary so one can get FTTP and the other outside that boundary cannot .
Obviously I don’t know how your address and neighbours are situated, but if for example , all the terrace faced the same road ( and are known by that road name ) but No12 was an ‘end terrace’ as estate agents would describe, and on a road T junction so the side aspect of No12 faced a second road , that all the others in the terrace don’t have , and it happens that in the past No12 overhead service was from a pole in that other road ( so basically No12 has two poles that could provide service, one pole in the same road as No2 -No10 , and an alternative pole at the side or rear of No12 on a different road ) , and if that alternate pole is in an ‘live’ upgraded area , then this historical quirk could mean that only No12 has FTTP access when No2 -No10 don’t, yet they are all on the same terrace.

Obviously this may not be the case with you , and your situation is nothing like that , and it’s just you at No6 excluded yet No4 and No8 have availability in which case it couldn’t be a scenario similar to what I have described.

Maybe take a look at No12 ( if it the only one with availability ) and see if it’s overhead wire is from the same pole as the wire to you at No 6, it may even be that No12 has two wires one on the front and one on the side/rear to a different pole to you , hence it’s FTTP availability.

Loaded the two screen shots for mine at 6 and number 12. Also loaded a picture of the front of the houses. Number 6 is the one on the far right and 12 on the far left.

There are two poles ( DP109 and DP111) , No12 is served from the pole on the opposite side of the road (DP111) , but No2 to No10 ( so including you at No.6 ) appear to be from DP109 , the pole on your side of the road situated very close to No2 , this can’t be confirmed for sure as it’s using street view images.

Even if there are FTTP CBT’s on both DP’s , they are not necessarily part of the same PON , it could be one PON is ready for service , and the other isn’t RFS , or it could be they are on the same PON , just that the CBT on DP111 is commissioned and RFS and therefore the addresses associated with it ( No12 and up over , 14, 16 etc ) show availability but DP109 is not ( yet ) commissioned and therefore its addresses are not able to order FTTP , including you at No.6.

Looking at the street layout , some addresses including yours , could potentially be serviced from either pole , but it’s the case that each address is only be associated with one CBT ( DP ) and dropwires are not allowed to cross over each other , so although you may think a solution is moving your address from DP109 to DP111 , it may not be that straightforward, if No 10 is served from DP109 , moving you to DP 111 means your new ‘wire’ would cross over the existing wire of No 10 , ( that’s assuming you are ‘allocated’ to the CBT on DP109 , but that does seem likely ) so moving your address to DP111 would not be allowed unless No. 106 , 108 and 110 were all ‘moved’ to DP111 at the same time , and that may not have the capacity for all these , plus any working copper lines would need rerouting in the copper network to keep them working , so it’s not really practical solution.

I notice you used the UPRNs to get the DSL checker returns , most people would use the postal addresses, is there a reason for doing so as there doesn’t seem to be anything odd about the address format , so do you get the same results using the postal address ?

use this formwize to get Openreach to check if your address has inadvertently been excluded, there is a section that basically asks if my neighbour can get FTTP why can’t I , that may clear up any dodgy data , after all the ISP ( BT ) can only offer what the supplier ( Openreach ) says is available, if OR have incorrectly mis assigned your address it needs OR to correct that dodgy data
