Hello everyone,

I have just ordered Full fibre 10 as open reach have just installed my road which I’m very happy about, I’ve always wanted BT FTTP as I’m sick to death with virgin. Under load just didn’t cut it, years ago just after it switched from teletext broadband it was ok but these days it’s just saturated.

onwards and upwards!, anyway, I just came here to ask a couple of questions.

I still have virgin installed at the property, this shouldn’t be an issue correct?, I haven’t migrated I’ve now got 2 providers.

Regarding the super hub 2, do I have full access? Ie can use my own router, I also have a switch but I’m going to drop that anyway when BT comes. Also do I need to use some sort of BT modem? Or can I go direct from the fibre to my router?

I saw BT use dynamic ip is this similar to virgin where as you’ll get a very sticky dynamic ip?.

also just out of curiosity, what kind of pings do you guys get to common locations, ie London, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam?.

if someone does reply regarding pings please also relay your location, I’m in Liverpool.

looking forward to getting the install!!

thanks guys any reply much appreciated.

Hi thanks for quick reply, I think the router I have is a little old so might have to get a new one. What connection is required on router? So I can get the fibre direct?

"What connection is required on router? So I can get the fibre direct?"

Openreach will install an Optical Network Termination (ONT) box in your house, which will terminate the fibre. From there an ethernet cable connects the ONT to your SH2, which has a dedicated broadband ethernet port on it which you can activate as a FTTP input. If you have your own router that presumably will have a similar ethernet FTTP input port as well.

you need to use the BT SH2 connected to the ONT to get digital voice ( covered many times on forum) but you can then connect your own router to the SH2

IP Voice is compatible with some third-party routers on the market.

The third-party routers would require their own coding to support any network IP voice service, so it isn't as black and white and you're are saying its not a NO.

I am familiar with people who have used their own coding to use Digital Voice on a thrid party router and there are threads on here with some coding on how to do it.

but I must stress it isn't advisable and BT wouldn't offer any support on how to do this.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

i won’t be using VOIP services. I just meant basic configuration.

So from what I’ve gathered I can buy a semi decent router and just login through ppoe.. my question is do I need BT auth for assistance for this is is it just plug and play

I'm perfectly aware of that thread and have, in fact, referenced it on the forum in the past.

You clearly haven't read that thread fully. If you had, you would have seen that the Smart Hub2 was still required to provide Digital Voice albeit not as the first connected device.

The methodology employed to do so is far beyond the scope of the vast majority of customers.

I don’t know why your arguing over something that wasn’t part of the post, not even sure why the voice was brought into the conversation.

also I think liquorice was referring to your comments regarding routing, not the voice.
