BB slowed from 74Mbps to 35Mbps

My BB has been running slow for about 2 months.

It usually gets 74Mbps with the latest HH, and has been solid for years.

Since the middle of December the speeds have been rather intermittent - sometimes as low as 16Mbps and usually about 36Mbps. The connection speed in the HH is capped at 40Mbps.

I've spoken to BT support and they're saying it's an Openreach issue. They ran some remote settings changes over TR-069 on the hub. Is there any chance someone could take a look at the screen in the HH and comment on this?

Let me know if anything else would be useful to know.

I have daily speed logs from the eero mesh downstream of the HH. I think the tech log from the HH has disappeared following the restart but I think it contained frequent (daily?) reconnects.

My BB has been slow for about 10 weeks - is there anything obvious here?

BT Support are looking at this and saying that multiple houses in the village are affected - but not all. Openreach are looking into it.

if you have a home phone and not on digital voice can you check for noise by dialling 17070 option 2 should be silent.

have you tried moving the hub connection to the test socket using a filter and see if that improves connection.

currently your attainable speed is on about 40mb hence your actual speed is low

Your noise margin is at 3dB so can't possibly see how you can get any faster speed.

You uptime is 2hours , is that you switching off the router ? , if not , obviously your service is losing sync , doing this frequently will force DLM to intervene and cap your line to aid stability….however the speed you once had seems hard to believe given where it is now , post your speed prediction from this site ,

Thanks - we don’t have an analogue phone any more.

It sounds as though this might be a fault with the external wiring.

The short uptime is because the BT support guy restarted the HH and changed a few settings.

I guess I’ll need to wait to see what Openreach have to say…

There’s only a single socket - should I take the front off and look for the test socket inside?

That looks as though you are on a 40/10 profile, I would ask BT to check your account details.

If you were on 40/10mb that would not affect your attainable speed but your attainable is only 40mb suggesting there is a problem with connection. I would connect to test socket with filter and see if that improves connection stats

Update - Openreach texted to say that they've fixed it.

It's still syncing at 20 down 8 up but I notice that the noise margin has improved from 3 to 6

- is that interesting? should I expect it to start speeding up?

3 to 6 is not an improvement, it is a deterioration.

DLM will start off at 6dB and might improve to 3dB but even if it does, you will not get much more than 21/22 Mbps

Effectively your speed has halved and one reason for that would be that 1 of 2 wires supplying you is broke.

Your broadband will function with that but at half the speed.

Ideally if you get get hold of a corded phone and plug it in you'd get nothing which would prove the fact that 1 cable somewhere is broke.

You could try plugging into the test socket and see if that's an improvement and if there is then your internal wiring is at fault otherwise it's an OpenReach issue.

have you tried using the test socket with a filter to se if that increases your connection

i note that your attenuation is now 45 whereas previously it was 41 suggesting further from cabinet or line interference giving a slower speed

I can't try the test socket, sorry, don't have a filter. FWIW, the situation is pretty straightforward. The external wire comes in to the back of the Openreach MK3 socket. There's a black wire from the socket to the HH. And that's it. There's no analogue phone here at all - it's all digital via the HH.

Just spoke to BT and from their POV the fault is open with Openreach, so no idea why I was sent a text saying that the fault has been fixed.

Just take off the front cover of the MK3 and try the test socket anyway.

Do you have another cable you can try as it's very clear from everything posted that only 1 wire is working. That would I think explain the stats about noise margin etc.

You need to eliminate internal issues so as to point the finger at OpenReach physical line issues.

Posting final set of measurements in case someone is kind enough to sanity check them.

I'm seeing about 72 on fast.com now. Assume OR have replaced a wire or something. There's been no obvious activity by men up ladders so I imagine a rat had got in the cab or some-such.

Any idea why max speed is 99/30? are they capping at 80/20 somehow?

These stats are great and back to where your connection should be. The attainable is as it says what your line is capable of but fibre 2 is capped at 80/20
