But you haven't said whether your fibre is to the cabinet (FTTC) or to the premises (FTTP). BT confusingly refer to both as "fibre".
Also, when you say your ethernet connected desktop computer loses its network connection (to broadband or to your home network?) does that imply that other devices you have maintain their connection?

The fibre connection is wired in through a hole in the wall to a small white box, I don't know tge technical names sorry, all other devices work on WiFi and not connected to the bt line

from your vage description do you have something like this

if so are the lights green as shown above?

have you tried using a different ethernet cable from router to pc?

Yes that's exactly what it looks like except the middle cable is grey and I think that would be the ethernet cable, I haven't tried another cable, the one I have was connected by bt engineer 3 months ago

The cable from the ONT goes to the router , your PC isn’t connected to the ONT but a router port so if it’s only your desktop PC that has an issue the ONT and its cable to the router must be OK , an easy first step in locating the issue is a new cable from the router to the PC , if you got a new router because of the ‘full fibre’ upgrade that installed the ONT (the white box ) change the Ethernet cable to the PC or swap it into a different Ethernet socket on the router , and give it a while to see if this fixes the issue , another easy check is that the cables are all seated securely

You got anything else that can connect with Ethernet, game consoles, smart tv , different , powerline type adapters, laptop/pc etc ….if you can connect other devices to the router with WiFi, but none of the Ethernet ports on the router work with your desktop, then either the router is faulty, ( in that it’s Ethernet connectivity is not working ) although its other functions are apparently OK , or your desktop is faulty ( TBH it’s much more likely to be the desktop, either hardware or configuration issues ) you really need to establish which it is .

If you haven’t already done so , reset the router to factory settings , but you really need another Ethernet device to try to prove to the router or your desktop .

You could try setting up a PPPoE session on your desktop, this entails you connecting your desktop directly to the ONT with an Ethernet cable , therefore eliminating the router from the setup, if this works you basically have proved the router to be at fault, but apart from the temporary physical relocation of the desktop to be near the ONT , you also need to be able to configure the desktop to do this , probably easier to use a different Ethernet device
