I'm due to move in with family whilst saving for a house .

I'm having a second line installed to the property and am in the same estate ,considerably closer to the cabinet.

All providers show speeds of between 50-70mbps to the property, but BT have run a test and say I can expect speeds (on part fibre) of 7-8mbps ....

How can this be ,if I'm closer and likely to have less problems with routing etc?

I currently get between 30-40 mbps (gl72rw) whereas being closer (gl72rh) I'm going to be getting 7-8mbps ..doesn't make any sense??

Ah, what we really needed to see is the availability information on the righthand side. Does it say "Available" or "Wating list".

There is limited capacity in a cabinet. It is possible that there is no spare connections in the cab and it is a "waiting list". I was going to suggest they may have offered you an ADSL connection in the meantime, hence the slow speeds. The use of the expression "part fibre" seems to suggest otherwise, though.

If it is on a "waiting list" it is really first come, first served, so it is a case of taking a look every morning and jumping in with an order straight away when a slot become availble.

There are a couple of possibilities why the speed offered is way off the potential speed (which is 80Mb according to the address checker ) it could just be a mistake they entered the wrong address or it could be whoever was in the property last , and had FTTC , had their router connected on a rubbish extension socket/wiring or possibly the ‘line’ had a fault that reduced the speed …if actual data for the line is available that’s used for the estimate, even if that real data is low for the address because of a unresolved issue or fault …try the neighbours addresses either side , if they are around 80Mb then your speed will be similar, irrespective of the checker estimate, but you may need to check there is no obvious defects like a crappy extension socket …..providers don’t hold the speed artificially low if the estimate is low , the line goes as fast as it’s capable of , faulty lines can be much slower , but the speed comes back once the issue is resolved , the only issue initially is if you sign up at 7Mb , and get 7Mb reporting a slow line may be tricky (they say its performance is as expected ) obviously something like a dodgy extension you can fix yourself, if it’s outside you may need to get creative with the fault report , not using slow speed as the fault report

The checker clearly states FTTC Unavailable, presumeably because to cabinet is full.

Wrong column, it’s SoGEA that needs to be checked post WLR , and that shows available, as stated the estimate wouldn’t have said part fibre if it were ADSL
