Your VPN connection being capped to your upload speed doesn't make any sense. I too use a VPN frequently. The only difference when using it is a couple of mb of my download speed, most often the same. All a VPN does is route your connection rather than BT's routing and goes via the VPN server. I can show you tracert's to prove it.

Any way to increase upload speeds?

Hi, I connect to my home network via a VPN meaning my download speed is capped at my plans upload speed if that makes sense. I currently have 500Mb/s plan (68Mb/s upload speed), while I understand I could change to the gigabit plan to increase upload, its only a small increase so its not worth it to me, ideally I'd have >200Mb/s. Is it at all possible to sacrifice download speed to increase upload speed? Perhaps BT could just change the download:upload ratio without actually giving me more total bandwidth?

Maybe that's a weird suggestion and they'd not be able honor it, but I thought its worth asking

Edit: Just wanted to give more info to avoid extra questions. I have a computer running opnsense connected straight to the ONT with a wireguard server running in opnsense. All internal infrastructure is gigabit and the download speed of the network I connect from is greater than the upload speed of my home network.

As far as I know, you'd need to switch to an altnet with symmetrical speeds.

No it’s not possible to sacrifice some download speed to increase upload speed .

The best you'll get from BT Group is the EE 1.6Gbps plan with an alleged 120Mbps upload. VPNs tend to be pretty CPU-dependent, so you may find you run out of steam anyway.

If you run a VPN server on your home network, and connect to that server when you are out and about, it will be capped by the upload speed of your home network - because thats the max speed the server can send data to you at. It's different to using a commercial VPN service!
