I am due to get FTTP installed tomorrow as a BT customer. Currently on FTTC Fibre 1 using a purchased BT Smart Hub 2 and complete WiFi disc.

As BT still think I have a Smart Hub they have sent me an EE branded Smart Hub as part of the regrade which I believe is the exact same as my existing Smart Hub 2 but in EE clothing.

Is it just a case of removing the rj11 and plugging the ONT to the WAN port on the back of my Smart Hub 2 and bobs your uncle.

I don’t want to use the EE kit as everything is already set up.

Thanks in advance.

It should be. Just be aware that there is an FTTP mode setting in Advanced settings > Broadband that enables that WAN port. If it is set to off the port will function as a LAN port rather than the WAN port.

Not sure why they would send you an EE router, though. Are you sure you've not been moved to EE as a result of the upgrade?

Thanks for the reply. Yes 100% upgrade through BT and not a migration to EE. All I can think of is that they don’t make the BT variant anymore.

Not something I've heard before but it could be the case.

While I think about it and just in case you're not aware, that WAN port needs an RJ45 ethernet cable to the ONT, as well, not the old RJ11.

Hi,

I just upgraded to BT fibre 100, they sent me an EE box and installed a Smart Hub SH20A which I have seen somewhere is the same as a BT SH2.

Ye the one they sent me is the same model. As I said above believe it’s the same as BT’s SH2 but EE branded.

This is the link to the EE hubs with more details. Looks like the EE variant of the BT SH2 is compatible with the BT complete WiFi discs according to the details.

https://ee.co.uk/help/broadband/getting-started/compare-our-range-of-broadband-hubs

Word to the wise..there are three EE router's. 5 6 &7. If you're getting offered the wifi 5 router then yes . But to turn away from the other two is madness as they are vastly superior

I think if you are upgrading to Full Fibre 500 or above you should be given at minimum the EE Smart Hub Plus that has WiFi 6 capabilities not the outdated EE Smart Hub or BT Smart Hub 2.

On the plus side. FTTP installed in 1hr30 mins overhead. MJ Quinn engineer was fantastic and discussed my needs as I needed the ONT to be installed on the 1st floor as that was where my router and some ethernet cables are routed to.

Ended up getting an internal CSP as worked out better cosmetically instead of having 2 cables running up and down the walls on the outside of the house.

Using my existing BT Smart Hub 2 and complete WiFi disk so was literally 1 min to swap over from FTTC to FTTP

Very happy and blazing speeds from the off.
