Hi,

I'm currently on the BT social tariff for Broadband and have no complaints at all. Meets my requirements perfectly.

I'm temporarily using another property due to urgent plumbing work needed. Do BT offer any short term contracts for just one or two months maximum at a second property? I don't mind paying non-social tariff rates, but would prefer to keep things as simple as possible with just one provider. If BT don't offer this, can anyone recommend someone who can?

Thank you.

BT do not do short term contracts.

If you have a good mobile signal and a good amount of data you could consider using your mobile phone as a hotspot and connect your other devices through that onto your mobile network or you could consider a mobile broadband package. Some mobile companies do a monthly package.

Thank you.

I rarely use a mobile and am still on a very old PAYG tariff which doesn't allow tethering so that's not an option in this case.

I will have to look at other Broadband providers.

Thank you for the suggestions.

None of those are available in my area unfortunately.

I think I will have to take out a standard 12 month contract and then get a refund for any remaining months after cancelling. I know there will be cancellation fees to take into account when doing that.

No, I will only be using the second property for a few days each week while work is being carried out. It is a very expensive way to go but I can't travel to a hotel for medical reasons so renting a second property in the same area is the only way to do it unfortunately. I was hoping to use my existing Wifi but the connection isn't strong enough through so many walls and keeps dropping out.

Thinking about it now though, I wonder if a Wifi booster would work instead?

Edit - If I do use a Wifi booster then I would need to find some way to attach the router high up on the wall. It's current shelving unit needs to removed for works access. I was surprised to see no wall mounting holes on the back of the modern EE router. Am I missing something there or can they really not be easily wall mounted?

A wifi booster would in my opinion be of little use. It takes the signal from your router and "boosts" it. If it is placed only a short distance from the router ie in the next room of your house it will only boost it more or less the same distance as the router already reaches plus the distance gained by placing it in the next room.

Personally I think that boosters are a waste of money.

You cannot get a refund. You have a minimum term, so if you cancel you will end up still paying for the remainder of the minimum term.

Are there any other BT customers within range? As a BT customer you should be able to connect to other BT routers. It’s a very (very) long time since I tried it and it might depend on whether you’d opted in.

https://info.btwifi.com

Just for information, there is no BTWifi now. It has been changed to EEWifi.

Most new EE Broadband and BT Broadband customers are automatically registered for EE WiFi, unless they've opted out. You can get online at an EE WiFi hotspot using your EE ID or BT ID and password.

Thanks. That seems a bit unfair as many people must move before the end of a contract.

I have also since found out that I can't start a new connection over there without having full fibre installed first. Looks like they won't just 'switch on' the old line again, even though it's a very short piece of copper to the cabinet. I can't have the hassle of that so between that and the no-refund policy, getting wired internet over there is definitely out of the question now.

Thanks both, I wasn't aware of this at all. Sounds like that may be a good option. I can currently see 8 other BT/EE Wifi in range, so would assume that most of those will still be in range at the other place.

Is there any way to check whether I accidentally opted out of this or will I just have to try it when I'm in the other property?

Having just checked my BT account, it does appear that BT Wifi is included so I'll try the laptop over there later today to confirm. If this does work then I can also just unplug my own router rather than trying to move it within the range of the cables while works access is needed.

If your existing property and WiFi are nearby, then it could definitely be worth unplugging this when you're at the other property just in case your devices try to connect to the weak signal.

It shouldn't have any issues with cost if you do connect to this by accident, though.
