For 1&2, it depends whether fibre is available or not.

You can't have anything done without ordering a service.

Broadband connection for landlord

Hello - I’m new here and hoping for some advice. I’ve bought a flat which my disabled son will eventually live in. But I’ll need to rent it out for a couple of years first. I was able to afford it because it’s a total wreck and I’ll need to do a lot of work to fix it up. Theres currently no phone connection in the flat as far as I can see.

The flats were built in 1970 and there’s a big BT Distribution Point (DP) for the whole block on the wall next to my place. I’m installing a shallow dropped ceiling in the room next to the DP which means I can run a cable in that void to the hall cupboard where I’ll have the fuse box and could mount a router (fairly central in the flat). It’s about 3m from the DP.

So my questions are:

1) Does the broadband come off the old DP?

2) Or will it be a new cable in off the street?

3) Any foreseeable problems I should know/think about?

4) I’d like the connection to be made/installed but not necessarily start a service contract. is that possible? What might it cost?

As stated , if FTTP is available the existing DP becomes irrelevant, but I would also check out the way other flats are served , even if the cabling isn’t in use , it can be the case where some ‘flats’ although having some sort of common distribution , an internal DP ( distribution point) or an external wall block DP , you see , wether it was convenient at the time for the installer or any other reason and if a telegraph pole was near by , dropwires into flats in buildings that also have its own distribution, so if FTTP isn’t available, it’s not a guaranteed that the DP you have spotted will be used , but it is the most likely, of course this is only for relatively small MDU’s , not tower block type situations
