Hi,

A follow on from my previous post, I got my full fibre broadband installed a few days ago and am currently on Fibre 1 with speeds of about 50-55mb. I am currently out of contract as wanted to get full fibre installed first and have been having a look at the deals available to me, and the cost of getting Full Fibre 150 is only slightly higher than for Fibre 1, so am considering upgrading to Full Fibre 150 but was wondering how this would work. As I've already got full fibre installed, do BT just update their systems for the higher speed on the activation date.

Would the activation date be the date the new contract would start?

Also I am assuming that this shouldn't have any impact on Digital Voice?

I've got the BT Smart Hub 2 which they had sent prior to the install.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did the same myself five months ago.

So, in order: Yes, this time it’s just a configuration change. I would assume the activation date would be the new contract date. (*I’ll explain more on that one below). Yes, no change to Digital Voice. Yes, it still uses the Smart Hub 2.

*In my case I upgraded from Fibre 1 Halo to Fibre 2 with the installation of Full Fibre. MyBT showed an offer of a free upgrade to FF150 included with this Fibre 2 package when Full Fibre became available. As Full Fibre was already available, I pressed for the free upgrade. They did try to charge me £6 a month extra for this “free” upgrade but backed down when I complained. £23.99 + £3 for the DV. It started a new contract but the old one was only a couple of weeks old, so didn't make any difference to me.

Hi WSH,

Thanks for the information which is so helpful.

Just wondering if I will need to do anything on the activation date - after I receive notification that it's been updated, will I need to restart the hub for it to recognise the new speed?

I can't remember if I did or not to be honest but, speaking as a retired IT tech, the old line about turn it off and turn it back on again isn't the joke people think. There's a lot to be said for a periodic reset.

A speed test on something like Fast.com will soon tell you what it is connected at and, unlike FTTC/VDSL, the speed on FTTP is what it says on the tin. You don't see the variability you get with FTTC.

Hi WSH,

Thank you for your reply.

Just wondering to test the connection, would it be best to test with a wired connection as I am assuming that for wifi connections, the speed on these could vary depending on the device used, age of device, out of date settings, etc?

yes you should use an ethernet connection not wifi as wifi will vary depending on conditions in your home
