I gets this email thanking me for my order for BT FIBER .. i did not order it ..

then the day came for the installation .. BRIGHT AND EARLY the guy arrives .. had a look round my Victorian town house and he was struggling to find a place where a socket and a window was near the fiber box out side the house .. so he decide that it would be best in the smallest room at the back of my house the furthest away from my office { as i work from home and all my internet appliances } .

I said to him many times that i would not get a signal from that room to my office or to my tv or to my heating system as it operates from my bt hub from the hive plug in .. or my apple tv ..dont be daft he told me this is supper fiber .. i just looked at him thinking your clown .. this is a house with 3 feet think walls and all the doors are fire doors due the building being a old hotel ,,

He also told me he would drill one hole to get it into the property .. well i said.. can you not use the hole from the old tv aerial that is already there .. he just laughed .. no mate this is fiber .. i gave him that look and went and did some work then i lost my internet .. BT in their wisdom turned of my copper to my house without telling me .. lost all my work from that day and could not get back on line ..

so the engineer went outside came back in with muddy boots i just looked at carpet from up the stairs into the hall followed back into the small bedroom there i found him pushing a cable through the Victorian wooden panels around the window .. this is a feature of the house and has been in place since the middle of the 1800s ... i went out side to see what other damage had been done ..

there was a peg in the front of the house for his ladder { no mention of that in the email nor was there any mention of a grey box going on the building } so that made it 5 holes in the sandstone.

my house is split into two there is a shop underneath me and then there is my house .. he had attached it to the shop and now this has cause huge issues with the owner of the shop and the damage it has cause by drilling into his building .. this was the last thing i needed ..

anyways .. i had no internet .. then he asked me if i had a power bar cable as there was only one socket in that little room as i would need two sockets .. what for .. well you will need your hub and this new fiber box { once again this was not explained by the bt email .. } in this room i said how the hell will my hub be able to reach the rest of the house ...

he left without installing the hub ..

so i gets my hub brings into the little room at the back of the house the closest to the bt fiber box outside ... oh its great so great it gives the same as i was getting from copper BUT ONLY IN THAT ONE SMALL BED ROOM .. the rest house gets nothing or 6 if i have the door open ...

i am paying over 40 pounds from bt for my internet .. i pay extra cause i need the extra speed for my work .. not i can not work from home anymore ...

my contract is up on the 9th of march it 3 weeks away .. i will not renewing that's for sure ..

bt told me over the phone if i want to have the box else where in the house it will cost 250 pounds to move it and i would need boosters at a extra cost on my bill ..

i told then you better come back and remove it from the building down stairs as that is not my wall and remove it from my house for i will not be paying any more for this **bleep** poor service .. and for something i did not want in the first place .. i understand that copper is finished i get it .. what bt do NOT GET WE ALL DO NOT LIVE IN WAVER THIN WALLED HOUSES ..

I'm afraid that this is yet another case of BT just assuming a full fibre installation by Openreach or one of its contractors has been successful, without checking with them first, and pre-emptively turning off the existing copper FTTC broadband service.

I also suspect you've been unlucky enough to get an operative contracted by Openreach to do the insallation, rather than a directly employed Openreach technician. Such contractors are on time-tied contracts and are under pressure to complete all installations within a specified time.

No it isn't, this is entirely different. Copper turned off, fibre working, just not to the OP's satisfaction.

That is appalling. When I had FTTP installed recently (with Community Fibre) I was only preparedc to have it installed if they would bring it into my office only. Luckily the man complied (I also paid £75 extra for their fibre to the room service too although we didn't use that on the day). I showed him exactly the route (route of the BT copper wire) and he was able to follow it. I did feel very lucky to get it where I wanted. We also had 3 mesh things installed

On the wifi in other rooms issue it is very difficult with very thick walled and very solid doors. I have ethernet cable to 5 rooms, to a 6th on Fridays and I put in an upstairs wireless access point.

Good luck with getting yours improved or changed.

I'm sorry you had so many issues with the installation. It's possible you missed the emails which had the information as when I had mine done they did mention the need for two sockets, the possible attachments to safely put up their ladder, etc.

Regarding the coverage, I live in a house with three floors and some thick walls, and the Wi-Fi from the kitchen where it comes in to my attic office isn't great, even with a couple of "discs" BT can send out. Some years ago I ran Ethernet cable from the broadband router to my office, where I bought an Ethernet hub to split out for my computers and a WiFi disc now being fed from the cable, meaning my wireless devices (phones etc.) can also connect better.

It's a bit of a faff, and the cable is visible in places, but in terms of connectivity it was the only viable option. I tried power line adapters but they didn't work well for me, kept cutting out.

The 6Mbps won't be the true speed of the fibre coming into the building. If your wireless reception is terrible everywhere except in the small room the router is in, then it's likely struggling to get a decent speed.

The energy usage should be negligibly higher than what you already had - the router shouldn't be using any more power than with copper broadband (if it's replacement router it is possibly newer and may be more energy efficient) and, although I haven't measured it, the little ONT box will only be using a few watts of power.

I'm surprised no-one has nentioned the hub does not need to be next to the ONT. Just run an ethernet lead to your office from the ONT and have your hub there, everything will work as before.

Someone turns up at your house and you don’t tell them to take off their filthy boots and then you let them walk everywhere and then publicly complain about it afterward? Decent respectful tradespeople do take off their filthy boots when entering peoples houses and they should lay down carpet protection if they need to wear the boots for safety reasons. Clearly the engineer that turned up at your house didn’t care and you didn’t do anything to prevent it.

When someone pitches up at your house to do a job, YOU take charge. Ask them what the plan is, get them to explain what it is they’re going to do. If they don’t like it, tell them to leave. I’ve turned people away from jobs in my house because they thought they could get away with not following my rules. Be assertive.

Yes, difficult balance but I did plan mine in advance, moved about 20 years of stuff from the garage (good chance for a clear out), made the route to b ack of house really easy, showed him the existing holes, didn't comment when he suggested throwing cable over the roof instead which would not have worked and thankfully he abandoned, left him alone quite a lot to work but went out about 3 times to see if things were doing okay and at end went into each room with him to check speed. The only thing I didn't realise was that speed with doors open is completely different in this house than speed with them closed (doors are very very solid and everyone has doors closed, perhaps even more than most families) and that zoom/teams for the few days a week certain adult children work from home (one did an interview from my house today even, entirely on Teams) is crucial which is why I have bolstered things with ethernet cables etc.
