It’s not very likely that Yorkshire in general has an issue , much more likely that your individual service has a problem, not a common problem affecting many…..you can test your individual service yourself by logging on to your BT account, if a fault detected often a fault is raised automatically, or call and report a fault yourself.

Ok - not sure how to deal with this, so any help appreciated. Normally I get 75 MBPS, but if you leave the PC to go into sleep and then resume, that is where the speed drops to around 14MBPS. The PC is a desktop, not a laptop, so I have not fiddled with any power settings, or any other settings related to the internet. The connection is via wi fi, the only issue we had a few months ago related to a new laptop, where the desktop did not connect straight away, you had to select connect. Not sure if that has any bearing?

Anything we can do or shall we just disable sleep mode?

@keithp Something else to consider, are WiFi drivers on your PC. WiFi drivers can be updated fairly often, Intel for instance do so frequently. If your WiFi drivers are from Intel, there is an update tool available from Intel that will prompt you to update any drivers available. I use it frequently on both my laptop and desktop PC.

Which WiFi band are you attempting to connect to? 5ghz or 2.4ghz band?

A reboot of the hub will clear the onboard cache potentially increasing speed over WiFi.

Ok thanks. I have done that now. It is 5ghz and says broadband status connected. I reset the hub and the firmware is up to date.

However although the speed starts at 74 after a while say 30ins or so it drops to under 10. The speed checker on the app shows speeds of 74.

Has anyone any ideas please?

You haven't answered the important question regarding the speed shown at the hub, which will show if the problem is within your network or external.

However, if the speed is fluctuating it won't be a line problem.

No ISP guarantees WiFi speed, it is impossible to do so as there are countless variables involved.

Then you should see if there’s a speed issue or not. If it’s solely dropped speeds on WiFi, then that is where the problem would I suspect, lay.

Yes try that suggestion. We have bought faster internet (eg just now mine on my PC was 3 GB - so I think that is about 3000 mbps and very fast. I have been testing all over the house. We get fastest speeds with ethernet cable - that might be a simple solution. It is not very hard to run it to the place you use your PC.

Ok - I can't connect via a cable at the moment as it means moving the desktop/ monitor and I dont have a cable anyhow. But I have double checked everything again - it seems the new W11 laptop continues to show speeds of 74 and only drops if the desktop is turned on, then it shows 35. Both the BT app and the BT site show a good connection for wifi. If I turn the desktop on, it shows 74 but it is after some use that it drops - a few mins ago I checked it and it had gone to to 13. If I restart I get the 74 again. I have checked the LAN drivers are up to date. Also the inbuilt HP checker shows a good connection.

So is it something to do with the PC, in which case how do I reinstall all the drivers for the wifi or is it something else? I understand you can ask an engineer to come and check your network - is it worth doing that?

Even if you had BT Halo , and requested the included BT visit to check your setup , it doesn’t include changing any settings in your own equipment, it’s purpose is simply making sure the BT kit is optimised for your home , if you don’t have Halo then BT support runs to remote diagnostics (of the BT kit not your own kit )

If your own equipment is the problem, or the Windows operating system you probably need to join and ask questions on forums that specialise in your equipment manufacturer or the operating system provider, and as far as getting an Openreach engineer visit on the pretext of a ‘fault’ , again if the speed it fine to the router (that’s why you were asked to provide the router connection statistics) then that’s all they get involved in , with the myriad of equipment that can be connected to the ‘internet’ your ISP and Openreach are only expected to be familiar with the things they supply, not the huge number of devices they didn’t supply that can be connected to the router .

Hello All

I am still having issues so I have another question please.

The set up I have is a desktop and a laptop, the hub is in the lounge, the desktop in a spare bedroom on the same floor and around 40 feet away. There is a hall with two doors, always open between the hub and the desktop. Having tested both the desktop and laptop, I am sure the issue is the desktop and ts wifi adaptor, so I am looking to get a replacement USB adaptor. My question - the download speed to the hub is 74, now from the hub to the two computers does the speed stay at 74 or around that mark for each or is it split between the two? When I put the laptop next to the desktop and had both on playing the same you tub video as a test, the laptop speed was 60, the desktop was 5.

So is the speed split or a constant to any device?

I’m not sure what you are actually asking , but if your ‘speed’ to the hub is 74Mb , then clearly neither device can exceed that and it overly simplistic to say it’s 37Mb each , depending on what ‘demand’ is required by each device, which will change millisecond to millisecond, each device (assuming the appropriate connection can provide the bandwidth , Ethernet or WiFi ) can to all intents use all the available bandwidth upto 74Mb , the only time realistically you would expect to see approximately 37Mb on each device is if you ran simultaneously a speed test on each one .

The chances are 74Mb will more than exceed what two devices demand without any noticeable delay , for example a 4K HD stream (a bandwidth intensive demand) is around 25Mb , so even if both devices were watching a 4K stream , there is still a 24Mb bandwidth headroom for other stuff , chances are nothing you will be doing will be anywhere near that .

The allocation of bandwidth is dynamic, depending on what each device requires, and for all but the busiest households with multiple TV’s watching HD/4K streams , phones, tablets , laptops etc all online at the same time , chances are you won’t exceed the bandwidth available.
