Can I plug a ubiquiti router into the ONT instead of the home hub?

The ubiquiti kit I have is the Ultra Cloud Gateway. I bought it because I saw an easy set up tutorial on youtube. They replaced their existing router set up completely, but it was American

If I plug it into the ONT using the port that the Home Hub used it reports "no internet". If I connect the Home Hub to the ONT and the Ubiqiti kit into the Home Hub it works perfectly.

Have I bought the wrong kit?

It should work. Are you setting it up as a PPPoE connection, with the right username, bthomehub@btbroadband.com etc? And connecting it to the WAN port?

Thank you for replying. I'm afraid you have totally lost me. I have a full fibre connection to the property terminating in an ONT box.

I have a very limited understanding of these things. I believe my Unifi gateway WAN port needs to be plugged into a modem. Does the ONT box act as a modem or is the Home Hub a combined modem and router? If the latter that might explain why it works when connected via the Home Hub but apparently not when connected straight into the ONT.

I can live with it if it has to go through the Home Hub with the Home Hub WiFi disabled, but I would prefer to get rid of the Home Hub altogether.

At the moment I have two WiFi access points (on the same WiFi network), and ethernet cable connections to a printer and a PC connected to the 4 LAN ports of the gateway. The gateway WAN port is connected to the Home Hub and the Home Hub WAN is connected to the ONT box

Yes, the ONT is effectively a modem. You only need a modem built into the router for VDSL/FTTC, not for FTTP.

It needs to be set up as a PPPoE connection for IPv4, (and a PPP connection if you want to also use IPv6).

The username needs to be bthomehub@btbroadband.com. It does not require a password. If the router insists on one, just type in “password”.

The DNS servers can be whatever you like, just put in the ones from the Smart Hub. I use Cloudflare and Goggle’s public DNS. You can look the addresses up on the internet.

You will also need to configure the DHCP to mimic the Smart Hub, so your devices will get an address when they start up.

Similarly, you will need to configure the Wi-Fi to mimic the Smart Hub. It will be easier to use the same SSID and password then you don’t need to reconfigure the individual devices.

No offense meant, but frankly, if you don’t even know the basics, I think you are wasting your time. Even with the best will in the world, no one on here is going to have the time to teach you basic networking from scratch. I’d put it back in the box and send it back. The Smart Hub is preconfigured for a BT connection and effectively plug and play, so I would stick with that.

The alternative is to RTFM, (Read The Flippin’ Manual). Presumably one came with it?

Thank you. I now understand the PPPoE connectivity and all is working well with no Home Hub involved
