I received a similar email today, from the email address no-reply@inform.bt.com It tells me that my "speed trial" is coming to an end and I should upgrade or "you'll automatically go back to the package you ordered with no hassle and no charge." I wasn't aware that I had signed up for a "speed trial" and I can't find any mention of it on My BT.

I rang BT and they confirmed they had not sent me this email, and googling the address I read that it is a scam.

More worryingly a couple of hours later I received a text on my mobile purporting to come from BT, with the same information.

Has the BT database of users email addresses and mobile numbers been hacked?

Both the email and the text looked exactly like a BT communication - nothing to make me suspicious except the message.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what's going on?

I received an email today saying my full fibre speed test is coming to and end and click below to upgrade to full fibre.

As I have been on full fibre 900 for a number of years and my contract is until March next year I thought this was a scam email.

I managed to contact someone at BT this morning who said the email was genuine and sent by them. To their credit they looked into it and could offer no explanation as to why this was sent. I assumed this would be the end of it but I have now received another email and a text message saying I will be downgraded next week if I don't upgrade.

Can anyone advise me what to do? I am going into hospital next week for an op and I could honestly do without all the hassle of chasing this up is they do downgrade me.

Any advice would ne appreciated

@Graham71 I find it difficult to believe that if you are on a 900mb plan until March next year, that you would suddenly and unexpectedly have your speed reduced for no reason mid contract, speed trial or otherwise.

Also, you don't state what speed BT will allegedly downgrade you to? 500mb, 150mb, what speed?

By and large, unless you live in a large family household with people gaming all the time, or you have a serious amount of devices connected at all times, then 900mb could be considered overkill for a lot of customers. But, it's your choice. Are you sure that even if you were reduced in speed that it would have a significant impact on you?

Hi Kimberlin

Thanks for getting back. They haven't said what speed it will downgrade to.

The reason why I am on 900mb is a long story and I won't repeat it here.

The point is why I have received such a message is disturbing and as I have said, I don't want the hassle of sorting this out as I have other problems to contect with.

For what it's worth I also received this same email today, am on the 500Mb tier, I have been on that package for over a year, the temporary boost/trial to 900Mb ended a long time ago and the contract isn't over till 2027 (also expiring in March, coincidentally). I'm presuming/hoping its an email sent out in error otherwise I anticipate a call to the complaints dept will be on the horizon.

Here too, my contract came to an end a few years ago. Text and email. BT domain sender addressing me by name.

Googled it to stumble across this.

As I've dug out to sign in anyway I may as well add: Happily with a much cheaper competitor now with fewer problems.

Also, dkim and SPF all passed on the email from inform.bt.com. so I can only imagine a mistake.
