Huh, you can't set 'static addresses' on a router, you can set address reservation which is entirely different.

If you want static addresses, you need to set them on the device.

It's not a 'professional device' it's a mass market plug and play router.

Experience in switching to full fibre

Ok so I just wanted to share my experience of moving on to full fibre, as after reading a few posts on here I was a little nervous. I was excited to be able to make the jump to full fibre as it feels like it has taken forever for it to come to my area. I had it installed a couple of weeks ago now and WOW what a change. My youngest is a big gamer and although our speeds were good before he never seemed to be happy.

Since I got the full fibre in I have noticed a big jump in my speeds and how my broadband performs around the house, no more little "hic ups" with apps etc. The install process with Openreach was what I was concerned about but after I had my appointment confirmed by BT I got confirmation from Openreach. On the install day I had a morning slot and the engineer was nicely on time, and the install was done nice and quickly and they made sure I was up and running before they left and had me test it on my phone. They asked where I wanted the little box put and talked through what everything was for.

All in all I love my full fibre and I just wanted to share my experience to perhaps put others mind at rest

yes I ordered in upgrade on 8th January 2025. Still not done. The fibre was connected to the Virgin fibre network in error and the work cannot be completed. I only found this out recently when an OpenReach guy came to finish off the job. Several phone calls to BT have just fobbed me off. Just got an email telling me I need to upgrade my BT contract! I suspect I'll be moving to Virgin soon.

I also have just changed to Full Fibre 150 from a ADSL service with another provider. I found the engineer to be extremely satisfactory. He was highly experienced technically and did a fine job. The service is fully up to spec. and very solid.

That router though!! I have the SmartHub 3 and after many years with Netgear routers this was a surprise, to say the least. It took me all morning to set 10 static LAN addresses. Where is the facility to add devices with a sensible name by MAC address? I can't believe a 'professional' grade service would have such a dumbed-down router. Anyways it's done now and should not need changing. It certainly does the job of routing. I understand that a business version exists of the firmware which is properly featured. This should be the standard for residential service as well. Hint !!

James

Most people in the domestic market do not know that static, reserved and dynamic addresses even exist, let alone what they are. And they don't care. What they want is plug and play!

If you want a professional grade router buy a third-party one. Personally, I like Draytek. (Just be aware that digital voice has to go through the domestic SH2/3. The business version is intended for use with VoIP and does not support digital voice).
