Forced switch to EE as part of Broadband renewal?

A long long time ago, when my 2 year Vodafone contract expired, I switched to a 12 month sim only deal with BT Mobile. At the time, the sim only plan came with free access to BT Sport (on mobile only).

Towards the end of 2023 I received an email to say the BT Sport App was closing but I could “continue watching TNT Sports on Discovery+ at no extra cost”. So I’ve currently got Discovery+ on both my mobile device and a Firestick.

That original 12 month contract has long since expired but I’ve just let things run effectively ‘out of contract’ with the ‘inflation + x%’ rises each year. I’m now paying well over the odds for a sim only plan with a modest data cap, but in my mind when I factor in the Discovery+ product, I’m not unhappy with the overall price.

So, my full fibre broadband contract is also with BT and is due to expire shortly. I’ve phoned customer services for renewal quotes but they want to force my mobile contract over to EE mobile as part of deal to renew my broadband. Now, I know this switch may be inevitable in due course, but I’m resenting being forced down this route when it’s only my broadband that is a contracted service at this stage.

I mentioned my concerns regarding loss of discovery+ if I switch to EE and the fact that I still get free roaming with BT mobile and the advisor then bamboozled me with some fancy EE mobile sim only product where I would get Discovery+ and roaming included as standard. The overall cost (broadband +mobile) was similar to my current price, the broadband being cheaper but the EE mobile deal being more than I’m currently paying. There was a lot of information to take in, in fact way too much to commit to a deal on verbal descriptions of how the EE product worked, so I asked for a brief email to confirm the offering. Of course, no such email has been received.

Just wondered if anyone has any observations or similar experiences?

The All Rounder and Full Works SIM cards on EE will include EU roaming on them. If you have any specific queries, pop over to the EE Community, and any questions you have can be answered there.

We moved to Smarty last year with no problems and it includes roam like home.

I just posted about my chaotic experience switching broadband and two family SIMs from BT to EE - it has been a trial - and not even done yet. Constant chasing. With BT for years out of contact but this forced migration to EE should be smoother than it has been. Regarding roaming, i was promised the All Rounder package with Roam Abroad add on included for free for all my troubles. Of course I have not seen anything yet in writing and I'm sure I will be chasing this. Roam Abroad includes free roaming in EU/EEA and USA.

As far as emails - HA! I've spoken to four different agents and got many different direct emails. Not ONE of them have ever replied back once i sent them an email - forcing a new call to the help line, with a new Agent. Each agent blaming the previous one for "not setting it up correctly". Eye roll. Good luck

i pay £12 per month for unlimited data and free roaming on EE.

Re being forced to move to EE for broadband.....i just renewed full fibre with BT recently at as reduced monthly figure...I did do it online...The minute human intervention is involved, im afraid their potential commission trumps all.

Thanks, I certainly hope my experience isn't the norm. I mean, EE and BT are both huge companies with hundreds of thousands of customers...surely most of them have to go through OK? For everyone's sake I hope so! Your mileage may vary. Good luck!

Similar to you, I had hoped to simply renew my BT broadband online without human intervention, which I thought would be a) simpler and b) avoid having to also discuss my BT mobile contract. Sadly when logging into my BT account to view "my broadband deals" the prices quoted were far from competitive, at around £40pm at the lower end of the full fibre speed range.

The link to the EE broadband offerings were better priced but reports of switches from BT to EE 'going wrong' put me off somewhat. Additionally I get a £5 discount on my BT mobile price by virtue of having BT broadband. I've lost the will to live in trying to find out whether this £5 discount will remain if I switch my broadband to EE (as BT it seems would prefer me to do).

I pay £39.99 for full fibre 500...its still substantially more than the cityfibre competition in my area, can get 900 for £27 per month, but i decided to renew this time.

Probably wont next time.....I got a mobile (double data) increase when i moved my mobile from BT to EE, but tbh, there are great deals at EE mobile irrespective of whether you have broadband with EE/BT.

£12 for unlimited everything, with speeds capped at 100 and free EU roaming is a great deal, and as far as im aware if you ask you will get it for either £12 per month or £13 per month.
