Unsolicited BT PIN sent to me

I've had an unprompted message from (apparently) BT. It reads :

BT here. Your PIN is BTBnnnn (n=number). Please be wary of unexpected calls claiming to be from BT. If in doubt , do not disclose this PIN or any other information. Thanks.

I've rung BT and there seems to be no indication that they sent a message.

If this is a scam how does it work? I've not been asked to do anything.

The pin is probably genuine but it's most likely a scammer has tried to access your account and that's why the pin was sent to you. You may get a call from the scammer, pretending to be from BT and asking you to read it back to them. YOU DON'T.

I was told by the technical guy at BT that it is in the wrong format to be from them.

I'm going to be wary of any follow up.

If dodgy (could be an error) they may have tried to telephone you after the text and were blocked somewhere along the way so the scam failed.

Either way I ignore all these messages/calls/emails. Just login to the proper site or app or better still do absolutely nothing.

I decided to take a belt and braces approach. I've changed the password, changed the mobile number and introduced 2 step verification(which I hadn't implemented previously!!).
