The price on offer was almost the same as that I was paying before the price increase. Therefore the rise of CPI + 3.9% was negated by the special offer which obviously I took up.

It is correct, all contracts now include an annual rise of CPI + 3.9% on the 31st March, re-contracting or changing package doesn't change this.

You will find more detail here: https://www.bt.com/tell-me-more and here: https://newsroom.bt.com/this-years-price-changes/

The increase actually comes to 9.3% and 9.3% of £48.99 is £4.55.

So the calculation is correct but whether it's justified is another matter. I believe that other providers are on the same bandwagon though, and I've just had an email from Netflix notifying a 10% increase (which they call a "change" to avoid the i word).

£48.99 x 1.093 = £53.546 (round it down to £53.54)

1.093 is the 9.3% increase.
