As stated , under what terms do you want to leave , leave completely ? , so you don’t want another company providing broadband over the existing Openreach network ? , if that’s the case you will need to speak to BT to arrange the complete cessation of your service , if what you actually want is to join a different provider over your existing Openreach connection, you don’t contact anyone other than the new company you want to use , they serve notice to BT on your behalf , and as already posted, you will know it’s taking place because you will get a ‘sorry to see you leave’ communication from BT .

Are you moving to another ISP? If so you just place your order with new ISP and they will notify BT that they are taking over your connection and you will get letter from BT confirming leaving

My contract ends in October, so if I find a better option elsewhere how do I time it so as not to get penalised from BT, do I have to change exactly on the contract end date? This is what confuses me.

place order with new ISP about 14 days before contract end date remembering contract does not actually end on that date just you move to a rolling monthly contract.

Once you’ve decided on which broadband company you are wanting to move to, contact the new provider and arrange the move, informing them when you want the move to take place.

You are best to make it a day or two after your contract ends to ensure there is no break in your broadband. You will have to pay BT for those couple of days but that should not amount to a lot of money.

Your new provider should arrange the switch for you. This includes letting BT know you’re moving.

You do not and should not contact BT to tell them you are moving as that may trigger BT cancelling your Broadband and it will cause issues for your new provider and a delay in getting it set up.

Your new and old broadband providers will both contact you to confirm the move. Then they’ll let you know your transfer date and if there are any outstanding charges to pay.

It may seem a little pedantic but your contract wouldn’t end in October , just the minimum term expires, so if your 12/24 month tie in runs out , as stated , and you did nothing ( not move or not renew with BT ) you would simply become a BT customer that can quit with 30 days notice , generally, and not just with BT most of the major ISP’s do this , being inside a minimum term is usually cheaper than on a 30 day notice .

If your current deal is soon to expire, then BT will probably offer you better terms than the rolling 30 day terms in return for a new minimum term , if you joined another ISP you almost certainly would have to agree to a 12/24 month minimum term anyway .
