Have I been ripped off?

Hi all,

I was just reviewing my household bills and I noticed that the BT one seemed pretty high - £73.46. About a year ago, they offered me an 'upgrade' to Fibre with Halo 3+. We were having issues with extending the wifi signal to parts of upstairs and the package included a visit from a BT engineer, so I upgraded. I went to the BT website to check what the current price was for new customers for Fibre with Halo 3+. I put in my postcode as though I was a new customer and it returned 'Not available at this address'. Then it finally dawned on me that it's a FIBRE subscription. We can't get FTTP as we're down a 250m driveway and they won't pay to lay the cable that far. We're on basic ADSL+.

I'm now wondering if I've been ripped off being recommended to move to a package that I can't use? Should I make a complaint?

You are probably on an FTTC connection, which is often called "fibre" but its only fibre to the cabinet. The price may well be right, if you have Halo 3+, which I think gives you a 4G backup unit.

What download speed do you get?

You may be able to downgrade your package when it comes up for renewal.

Below is current price for halo 3+ as a new customer so if you have voice service it's less, if not it's likely after the price increase

We get about 60Mbps, so not too bad, really, but it's not FTTP. I feel a bit cheated and I wish I had checked the package more closely. I will definitely be downgrading at renewal.

If you get 60Mb then you're on FTTC, commonly referred to as "fibre", & not ADSL. FTTP is generally referred to as "full fibre". Obviously we have no idea exactly what you were offered & more importantly, accepted. But MyBT will tell you what package you are paying for. It's highly unlikely you were sold full fibre where it's not available.

No idea what a "fibre subscription" is?
