I am moving home and temporarily moving in with my son who has broadband, he is a home worker. To avoid cancelling my BT package and paying the penalty of £150 or so I have been offered a work round. I have been asked to place an order to supply broadband at my son's address with a required by date of 1st October. To keep the order active I have to move the required date further into the future on a regular basis. I am not happy with this, I am not 100% sure that this won't result in my son losing his broadband. Has anyone else been through this scenario.

Your broadband is still going to remain active at your current house.

When someone moves in they are going to place an order for broadband. This will result in you receiving a message to say someone want to takeover your line.

If you take no action, then your line will be taken over, and your contract will be ended, and you will face cancellation charges.

If you stop the takeover, then the new owner will not be able to get broadband.

If your order to move your service to your son`s house goes through, then he will get the same message, and could lose his broadband, unless the order is for an additional line, and not a Working line Takeover.

There are lots of things that could go wrong.

You would still have to pay for the broadband at your current house, even if nobody is moving in. It usually cheaper to pay the cancellation fee, as I think it does not include VAT, as there is no service supplied.

See https://www.bt.com/help/account-and-billing/manage-account/thinking-of-leaving-bt-

See the bit about how they calculate the fee.

Thanks for the warning. I'm going to take the hit on cancelling

That is the best option, then you can choose your own date for moving, and as a new customer, you should get a good deal.
