Can I cancel the renewal and leave it on a rolling. It's the social tariff so will the price still stay the same £15 if I cancel FFTP as it's no use . It's still the same maximum speed as I get with FFTP.

I assumed on the social tariff after 12 months you have to renew or you get taken off ? I'm already on digital voice

Hi I'm on the social tariff of home essentials £15 we get FFTC . Today I rang up to renew or to check if it's rolling over. The guy renewed it but also forced upon me FFTP ? I told him many times I don't want this I'm happy with my digital voice I get over my existing. Yet he kept pestering saying no I can't remain on the social tariff as f I refuse FFTO. I asked the advantage and basically nothing I'll still get the same speed my social tariff goes upto ?

He's booked me an engineer.

What do I do ? Can I cancel this. I just checked my account and it was already on a rolling monthly social tariff price. I was confused by all the terms used. Kept saying no you have to install it then said once the engineer comes you can refuse it if you don't want it ? But surely my refusal now should be enough why waste an engineer visit. As far as I know FFTC with digital voice is ok as BT is still selling it . The house is my parents I just pay for the fibre I don't want full fibre there are only 3 of us of which only 2 use the internet. The brickwork is old I don't want holes drilled in.

Any suggestions please

Its possible that the address is now an FTTP priority one, and any contract renewal has to be FTTP.

What prompted you to attempt to renew the contract, as it would have continued as it was? Its usually best not to contact BT unless absolutely necessary.

Use the address checker on the page below, and post the results, but edit out your address details first, but leave the exchange name and cabinet number showing.

https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL
Please include all notes at the bottom.

Ignoring the apparent complication that the social tariff is because you qualify for it , but it’s your parents house ( so do they qualify in their own right or is some sort of subterfuge used to get the product for a non qualifying household ) , but Openreach can and do incentivise ISPs of all stripes to get their customers onto FTTP once it’s available, so in some respects the fact it’s BT and you have a cheap social tariff is irrelevant….someone refusing an upgrade to FTTP can have genuine reasons , like a renter is specifically told by their landlord that even minor work ( and FTTP installation is minor work ) needs the landlords specific permission which may not be given …..with regular tariffs , refusal to take FTTP could mean a more expensive out of contract price as renewal to get the cheaper price is dependent on taking FTTP, but as there is no difference in price , in or out of contract with the Essentials ( social tariff ) it may make no difference if you refuse, but the reason for your refusal is pretty weak sauce , and eventually you will have no choice but to take FTTP or be disconnected from Openreach ( although that may well be many years away ) , in my opinion you should bite the bullet and take the offer of FTTP , it’s more reliable , it delivers the headline speed , no distance related reductions in speed , and after all you will have to do it sometime, so why not now

I live with my mum she doesn't qualify and she doesn't use the internet. So I pay for this for my own sold use only . The house is hers she does not want drilling or work done as the walls are not that great . She just had the living room painted and plastered aswell as have a boiler fitted which left the place in a mess. She's specifically told me no to FFTP

If you intend to refuse FTTP , don’t simply wait until the installer turns up , and tell them to go away , at least have the decency to advise BT in advance that you are going to refuse the FTTP upgrade , you could bend the truth and just state your landlord ( your mother ) won’t allow the installation so an upgrade to FTTP isn’t possible , presumably this won’t result in any price increases , that would occur if you were not on a social tariff, but as stated it’s a pretty weak excuse, especially if your service is overhead from a pole , the before Fttp and after Fttp will be pretty much identical

Hi just went online and cancelled it as told them my mother won't allow it just yet.

The guy asked why as it's the same price. I told him I pay for the broadband she doesn't use it but it's her property. He's cancelled it and told me I'll be on my existing deal which is £15 on a monthly rolling but by the end of 2025 copper will be turned off so I'll have to go along with it

Time bring this seems ok

Thanks for your help

I assume I'm on monthly rolling as my 12 months ended on 5th Jan but if I log on and look it says my next month's price is £15 too

That's what I thought. Currently I'm in copper I get FFTC I'm on digital voice. There is absolutely no need to put me into FFTP if the speed I get is still going to be the same ( max 36meg on the social tariff) yet the guy kept insisting no by end of 2025 everyone has to be put in FFTP. Time being ive managed to cancel but I feel they are misleading people

There are many properties that are copper fed Direct In Ground (DIG), where it would be expensive and disruptive to swap to fibre, so copper will always be there.

I live in such a property, and have an ADSL connection direct from the exchange which is always powered. FTTC is available, but I do not need a faster speed, and do not want to rely on mains powered equipment installed in an outside cabinet.

I'm on FFTC but feels like FFTP is being forced upon me via mis information. For now I managed to cancel the renewal for 12 months and I'm on the same monthly rolling contract at the same price ( £15 social tariff) let's see for how long. If the speed will still be 36 up 10 down on FFTP I don't see the need to move as I get that currently on FFTC

If on FTTP you get the full profile speed , so that’s 40, 55 or 80Mb , depending on what profile the social tariff uses ( there are 2 used , the 80Mb one is the higher one , and either 40 or 55Mb the lower one ) , you would have to check what the lower social tariff profile is , but if you get 36Mb now , you would get 40 Mb or even 55Mb depending on what the lower social tariff profile is , after conversion to FTTP you get the full rate as there is no distance related reduction so if you get 36Mb now you would get better speed on FTTP
