In May 2024, BT offered various broadband deals with pricing ranging from around £29.99 per month for the Fibre Essential package to £47.99 per month for the Full Fibre 900 package. These prices were subject to the annual price increase that happened on March 31, 2024, which was a fixed £3 increase for broadband plans.

For the past year BT have been charging me £80 for the 900 package. I have just had this reduced to £47.99 which is what is should be and and has been the true cost since 2004. (se above)

How do I go about being refunded for the overcharging?

BT aren't interested.

A bit harsh but there is truth in what you say and I wouldn't expect a result, but you never know.

My biggest gripe is that several years ago I had a "free upgrade" to Halo foisted onto me. My instinct at the time was that it would prove to be anything but free in the long run. Should have gone with my instincts and blocked it at the time but I was working then and too busy. Now I'm retired and got the time on my hands. While I'm not paying quite that much, they are taking the p... and it's overdue for me to do something about it. I also think that the idea that you will never pay more than a new customer is also clearly misrepresentation and long overdue to be challenged.

Can you post a link to where BT state the above to customers other than those that are signing up to a Halo contract can get the same price a new customer as I am unbale to find it ?

That's the point. I am a Halo customer and I can't get the same price as a new customer. If not misrepresentation legally, then certainly morally.

The link would involve access to my personal "deals", so I'm not going to publish that.

Which Halo package were you on. Halo 1 and 2 are no longer available to new customers or for those that are on it so you can not renew that package at the same price as new customers.

You would need to take out a Halo 3 package if you still wanted Halo add ons.

I have no idea if you would get that at the same price as new customers taking that package.

Have you called BT to ask and if you have what did they say?

The Halo 3 price promise is often misinterpreted, many compare the price of a package without Halo to their more expensive package that includes Halo and conclude that the price promise of not paying more than a new customer is not being upheld, but the comparison needs to be a new customer with Halo , not a new customer on the same speed profile without the Halo add on .

Although it’s clearly not an easy move to make , Halo can be dropped once outside any minimum term …so if anyone with Halo thinks the benefits don’t outweigh the cost , get it removed when the opportunity arises, that apparently doable even if it takes a lot of effort , effort that ideally shouldn’t be necessary,

As a new customer (unless this has recently changed), you are not able to take out an initial contract with Halo (though Halo+ is available). You can add Halo once you are a couple of months into an agreement, although it restarts the 24-month contract period. You cannot make a true "new customer" comparison with a product that is not available to new customers! On top of this, most (not all, please don't be pedantic here) of the basic Halo package consists of agreements to provide the level of service that BT are already obligated by contract to provide!

I really am in the camp that I would not be surprised if BT were to, at some point, face a mis-selling suit over the basic Halo package - or even their entire quoted pricing structure.

*I'm not angry over the package I've recently renewed, it's not a bad deal at all. I am somewhat angry over the price my inlaws who have never "shopped around" pay, as it's 2 1/2 times my costs for a substantially slower service with add-ons they don't need/use.
